Best Comic Covers of the Week: 12/21/12

Check out some of our favorite comic book covers out of all of this week's new releases.

Each week we look through our buy pile and choose what we feel are some of the week's best looking comic covers -- no easy task. Here are some of our favorites, below.

This week’s cover to MASKS #2 by artist Alex Ross is one we couldn’t look over. The way the artist melds each of these Dynamite heroes together in one cover is fantastic, and he does so in a way that still spotlights each of these individual characters.

Artist Phil Noto's cover to ASTONISHING X-MEN #57 is really well done, with a big focus on Warbird at the center of the image. In the reflection of her blades are Wolverine and Gambit. It's a pretty picture with some fantastic colors.

It's evident that the cover to this month's AVENGERS ACADEMY #2 is an homage to the original cover of Lord of the Flies. It's a beautiful picture that is eloquently illustrated with vibrant colors that really got us to give it a second look. It's a fantastic cover by artists Chris Bachalo and Tim Townsend.

We loved the really pulpy cover to THE BLACK BEETLE: NIGHT SHIFT #0 by Francesco Francavilla this week. It reminded us of those old 1950's mystery paperback covers in the way it is styled, and the way Francavilla plays with light and shadows is simply awesome.

Speaking of Francesco Francavilla, the artist knocks it out of the park a second time with his stunning cover for CAPTAIN AMERICA AND BLACK WIDOW #640.

Artist Joao Ruas delivers yet another brilliant cover to FABLES with the cover for FABLE #124. The image is extremely detailed and the colors are minimalistic which really helps the details of the cover really pop.

Last but certainly not least was the cover to HELLBLAZER #298 by artist Simon Bisley. Bisley delivers a brilliantly detailed and very creepy cover to the comic, which is appropriately titled 'Death and Cigarettes.'

As usual, there are definitely some comic covers that we haven't mentioned. Feel free to list and post your favorites below and let us know which books you thought were some of the best this week.

Avengers Arena 2 is one of my frontrunners for Cover of the Year... gotta say, that Black Beetle cover is absolutely gonzo though.

Really great covers this week. Even though I hate Avengers Arena, and everything it stands for, it is a well drawn cover, but I do have to wonder why its on the list since it majorly lacks originality which I thought was something that was heavily looked at when choosing.

Fables and Astonishing X-Men take the cake for me!

Well you can always look it up on Google if you don't know, it's kind of cool actually, see?

Although, I don't think that was the original cover to Lord of the Flies, according to Wikipedia at least the one on the right was:

@Faeye: Good catch. I thought it seemed unlikely that a previously unknown writer would get such a beautiful portrait on his book back in the middle of the last century. Book companies usually do not invest that much on an unknown writer these days much less back then.

@Faeye: Yeah, i think that the one on the right is the original. The one on the left is the more famous one, though, and it's the image that is used for most editions.

How in the world was Wonder Woman #15 not on the list? By far my favorite cover of the week and better looking than at least 2 or 3 on the list.

Who is that on the Avengers Arena cover? I don't like Avengers Arena's premise and the fact that they let you know who wins basically, but it's driving me mad that I don't know.
