A New Spider-Girl Title's Coming

But who's wearing the webs this time?

One guess as to who's wearing the webs.
One guess as to who's wearing the webs.

Thanks to Closure for bringing this to our attention. Comixtreme’s got the cover for the upcoming issue of Previews and it’s promoting a new SPIDER-GIRL series that’s hitting in November. This isn’t an entirely new Spider-Girl, however.  If you’ve been reading AMAZING SPIDER-MAN lately, you’ll know that the just-finished GRIM HUNT storyline restructured Spidey’s “family” at bit.

See, Madame Web’s been killed by Sasha Kravinoff but, before she died, she passed her seer powers on to Julia Carpenter (who's alternately known as Arachne and Spider Woman II.) Now that Carpeneter’s effectively become Madame Web II, she’s passed her costume along to Araña. However, in spite of Spidey’s suggestions, Araña insists she won’t be calling herself Spider-Girl. Judging by this preview, it looks like she’ll be reneging her assertion eventually.

The funny thing is that Araña was originally going to be called "Spider-Girl" when she debuted in that AMAZING FANTASY revival in ’04. Fans were miffed about that conflicting with the MC2 SPIDER-GIRL and, as I recall, their response got this new character dubbed Araña. Bleeding Cool actually ran a bit about this last week, wherein "Mayday" Paker's creator, Tom Defalco, put a statement about her adventures concluding (for good) with the SPIDER-GIRL: THE END one-shot. == TEASER ==

How many books that debuted in '98 are still running today?
How many books that debuted in '98 are still running today?

I think 12 years, three solo series and more than 150 issues worth of appearances (at least) is an unequivocally impressive run for any character or creative team. It's doubly-impressive considering how long SPIDER-GIRL's outlasted the entire MC2 line. Of course, this is comics, after all - - I’m sure you’ll be seeing Mayday return someday. She’ll probably even have some crossover/meet up with Araña eventually.

What's maybe more interesting is how this is another example of the Marvel U accumulating more “legacy heroes” lately - - something that's traditionally been DC's domain. And it opens the inevitable question to the Comic Vine community. Are you Team Mayday or Team Araña?

I hate to say it about any character but I've never enjoyed a single of the "Mayday" stories. I guess the fact that it takes place in a future that seems less and less likely doesn't help.

On a more general note I think there are just too many alternate futures in the Marvel universe. If these futures are meant to feel relevant there must at least be a sense that each one could be the true future of the Marvel universe.

Team Mayday or Team   Araña? Ha,   Araña all the way. I first became introduced to her during Ms. Marvel's thing in the Civil War, and since then I've been wondering what happened to her. Never really found out. I'm glad they put her in Grim Hunt, and I'm even more glad that she had a major role. I'll be looking forward to her upcoming ongoing, and pray to God that it doesn't get cancelled. I think she's a really cool character, and she definitely deserves some time in the spot light. I think it's good Marvel's sticking with their theme of "embracing change" even after Dark Reign being over. This legacy thing is on the right track with keeping up with that.

" OK so I by graphic novels not comics, I'm also a huge fan of continuity and the whole legacy concept. That considered I was planning on buying the "Web of Spider-man" Storyline.   My question is: Is it a stand alone series or does it cross and mix with "Grim Hunt" too? Cauz now you got me intrigued by "Grim Hunt".  Grim Hunt is a part of the (official) main Spidey storyline right? Honestly IMO theres too many so I tend to buy the graphics with the best storylines art and the most action. "
It started in Grim Hunt, so it's definitely gonna be intertwined with Amazing. Not sure how they're gonna do the trades for this though.... it'll probably gonna be it's own thing.

Finally. Arana is a dumb codename that no one probably even pronounced right. Off the bat she should have been Spider-Girl.

MC2 died a long time ago and Spider-Girl has been flailing for a while [which is why they keep cancelling her series and placing her in other books like Spider-Man Family, then making her comic web exclusive and the like]. She had a good run, but it seemed prolonged, and it was kind of iffy to have one book from a universe that stopped producing books running for as long as it did.

The Spidergirl Mayday comics are some of the most poorly written comics ever released.

I happen to love May Parker and especially her clone, Mayhem. I am always happy to have another female super-hero around, especially a spider powered one, but I think I'll probably stay on Team Mayday.

I guess Arana will no longer have to correct the person calling her spider-girl you know it will happen. Remember Spider-girl the original was alternate future. Event thou Marvel say she will stick to the continuity there is chance that she may change.

The spider-girl mayday version could come to marvel reality like Nocturne. This may get confusing. There is the Mayday version, Japanese live action version, Ultimate version Shadowcat posing a Spidergirl, and now Arana version.

Do you think May will stick the name when she gets older or will she change it.

The Madam Web mantle has been passed the bound to happen.
