    Thor vs. Arak

With only five issues to go, it seems that the story from this month was one the Thomases had wanted to do, but never got around to. So, this story of Arak falling in battle amidst two tribes of warring vikings was slipped in as a flashback told aboard the ship where Arak and friends are sailing toward the Far East when the passengers passed the time by telling tales.

If you're writing a story in the Robert E. Howard mold, you are almost obligated to have a tale where the hero is severely wounded in battle, and is either the last man standing, or gets separated from his cohort, when he begins to have visions of what may or may not be a Valkyrie, come to take him to Valhalla.

Really the story was pretty much an excuse for Roy Thomas to do his version of What If #39 ('What if Thor Battled Conan?'), with Arak substituting for the Cimmerian.

On the whole, it's a fine story and fine art. It's timing may be a little off, given all the other events that need to be wrapped up in Arak - but there's not much to complain about.
