NOW you actually have a future!
Wolverine is the ultimate killing machine and totally suitable to become a teacher, am I right? However, now Wolverine has lost the one thing that's given him his edge; healing factor! With losing his #1 ability in combat that has allowed him to live for over a 100 years, Wolverine is now mortal and killable. This can't possibly be good for The Wolverine! Written by Paul Cornell with artwork by Ryan Stegman (pencils), Mark Morales (inks), and David Curiel (colors).
The Good
Paul Cornell did a great job with this first issue! We get to see Wolverine right after he lost his precious healing ability and was badly beaten by Sabertooth. Yes we've seen Wolverine without his powers before, but it's always nice to shake up the creative bag again and bring back this concept. From this first issue, Cornell really set us readers up for what we can expect from this series! We have Wolverine without healing factor re-learning new ways to kill, Wolvie leading a new team of mutants, and him having to do whatever his new bosses say if he wants to get revenge against Sabertooth!
Wolverine has an interesting cast of characters that follow him in this journey, all names that are forgettable, but I'm sure with time they will grow on us. One scene that was very memorable in this issue was Wolvie thinking of the future he could possibly have. It was only three panels, but seeing Wolverine happy and actually thinking of the joy of being old is a win in my book.
The art team's artwork did a great job! The look of the characters and design of the world was interesting and it respected to what we [THE READERS] expect from a Wolverine/X-book. A+ art team, A+!!!
The Bad
I do wish there was more Wolverine action! You know "skint, punch, cut, stab, shoot, GAAAAH, etc!" While this is just the first issue, I automatically expect over-the-top violence and action in a Wolverine story every issue. I don't know why, but that's what I expect. IF the story was going to go with less action in the first issue, they could've done without it. The story was strong enough that it didn't need any action whatsoever because of how Paul Cornell weaved the story to show how Wolverine is really mortal now and thinking about his future! The action just seemed thrown into this issue because it's a "Wolverine" book and that's what's expected, instead of carefully placed into the story to help aid it and going all out and over-the-top that we [as Wolverine fans] have come to expect.
The Verdict
It's a Wolverine book, if you don't know who Wolverine is, where've you been? You should check out this Wolverine book because it's fun and has a good creative team, so check THIS OUT! 4 out of 5.
