Under a Candy-Pink Sky
The Great
The writing. Joe Harris’ script, from his co-plot with X-guru Chris Carter, moves the story of Scully’s abduction by the Acolytes forward with style. We get a chunk of Mulder’s search, a chunk of Scully’s struggle and each both answers questions and poses new mysteries. And then is gets amazing. The where, how and what now revealed for The Lone Gunmen is SO COOL. If the new TLG hideout becomes a base of ops for this series, the possibilities are excellent.
The Okay
The art. Michael Walsh continues to do an excellent job capturing the faces and expressions of these famous characters. That’s a tough task and I give him big props for it. His style is just too spare for my taste, that’s all. It may be a plus for folks with other tastes.
The Bad.
The coloring. Maybe I should have used a heading of “The Hideous.” In the first issue, I praised Jordie Bellaire’s muted colors as a good fit for the book. Not this time. This issue is filled with panels of the most putrid shades of orange. Now, this is not a case of pure color bias, like Brian Buccellato talks about regarding purple. Orange has been my favorite color since I was 3. But the particular tones selected here are awful. To top it off, we get pink skies over Virginia at 10 am. Yuck. These colors turn an easy 4 star book into a 3.
The Verdict
It’s not easy on the eyes, but it’s a great read. Season 10 stays on my “I’m counting down to next month” list.
