JACK IS BACK!!!
"GOTTA GET BACK, BACK TO THE PAST, SAMURAI JACK!" Samurai Jack is BACK! After being prematurely canceled in it's 4th season, fans of the series knew that we'd never see Jack defeat Aku and return to the past. Even though it was teased that an older Jack would kill Aku, as seen in season 3 "Jack and the Traveling Creatures", we never saw this happen. However, now with IDW Publishing and Cartoonetwork reaching an agreement to publish Samurai Jack comics, fans can hopefully await a proper ending to the Samurai Jack saga "and undo the future that is Aku!"
THE GOOD
First of all, writer Jim Zub and artist Andy Suriano did a incredible job with this first issue. Picking up where the show left off will give many Samurai Jack fans closure. While I would still like the show to come back and actually finish where they left off in season 4, this will have to suffice. Zub does the Samurai Jack series justice as his story resembles the normal pattern you'd see in the show (e.g. Aku's opening monologue of what has happened, dramatic opening scene, and then delving into the story). This is achieved, not only by Jim Zub's writing, but also by Andy Suriano's artwork as he really captures Jack's world. The perfect mixture of colors and the design of characters makes long time Samurai Jack fans feel right at home.
THE BAD
With talks of this being a 10 issue series, this would deviate from what the Samurai Jack show originally teased in season 3. Unless each story arc in this series is 2 issues and it has major time jumps, then it'll be back on track. However, that is stretching things. While I'm glad that Samurai Jack is back, I do not think that you can conclude Samurai Jack's story within 10 issues and it be good. Hopefully as the series progresses it can persuade me differently, but right now I'm sticking to what the TV show had established.
THE VERDICT
Samurai Jack is BACK! And to many this is a good thing. While the creative team is doing the Samurai Jack TV Show justice with keeping the pattern exactly the same like in the TV show, I don't think limiting this title to 10 issues will do justice to what all Samurai Jack has done in his 4 years that he was on TV. Having been on air for 4 years and nowhere close to actually finishing, how can this creative team finish Jack's story within 10 issues and it do the series, and fans, justice? That is the big question that will make or break this series. Hopefully it will shatter the expectations and do well. Hopefully. Overall 4 out of 5.
