The Thing and the Ultimate Weapon! (Hostess Ads #34)

No Caption Provided

Not to be confused with The Incredible Hulk and the Ultimate Weapon!.

On a site dedicated to making a wiki history of all things comics, comics ads should not be forgotten. Especially the ads for Hostess Fruit Pies, Twinkies, and other snacks. Starting in 1975, Marvel and DC heroes (and the Harvey characters!) spent seven years throwing Hostess snacks at a bizarre line of villains to stop their crimes. Although many of the villains were completely silly, they were created specifically for these ads, and in many cases, not even the names have been used again, since the ads stopped in mid-1982.

So I thought I'd show an ad here, and make a list of the comics I find it in, as I run across them. This list features: The Thing and the Ultimate Weapon! As noted on the Hostess Superhero Advertisements page:

Attempting to hold the Thing prisoner, mysterious robed creatures first utilized a massive press, then set the metallic villain Torgo up against the Thing. Ben Grimm used a mutual enjoyment of Hostess Fruit Pies to end the duel with Torgo, while the robot's masters lamented being unable to sample the treats.

If you think Torgo seems a bit familiar, that's because the name first appeared ten years earlier, in the October, 1969 Fantastic Four #91. He was the robotic enemy of The Thing in a space arena, programmed for nothing except the death of Ben Grimm! Seems someone may have been on a deadline, and decided to pay homage to a favorite story. I say nothing wrong with that.

OH! And bucking the directive mentioned by Bob Rozakis in his interview with Seanbaby.com, The Thing eats a fruit pie at the end! Way to stick it to The Man, guys!

You Get A Big Delight In Every Bite <33 (Hostess Treats) 35> Enjoy.
