"Captain Marvel Defends the Earth!" (Hostess Ads #117)
| On a site dedicated to making a wiki history of all things comics, comics ads should not be forgotten. Especially the ads for Hostess Fruit Pies, Twinkies, and other snacks. Starting in 1975, Marvel and DC heroes (and the Archie and Harvey characters!) spent seven years throwing Hostess snacks at a bizarre line of villains to stop their crimes. Although many of the villains were completely silly, they were created specifically for these ads, and in many cases, not even the names have been used again, since the ads stopped in mid-1982. |
So I thought I'd show an ad here, and make a list of the comics I find it in, as I run across them. This time it's: "Captain Marvel Defends the Earth!" As noted on the Hostess Superhero Advertisements page:
With the Kree villain Phae-Dor convincing his warriors to launch an attack on Earth, the American military began mounting a counterstrike. Captain Marvel used a peace offering of Hostess Twinkies to sate the Kree and stave off a full-scale war.
Preceding this Hostess ad by four years, Phae-Dor first appeared in Inhumans #3, in February, 1976, and has only appeared in eleven issues since then (according to the CV wiki, which notes four more than the Marvel wikia page does). In some minor irony, the Kree shown in this ad are "pink" Kree, but Phae-Dor is "blue" Kree and racist against pink Kree. That's Marvel for ya: bringing real world problems into our escapism!
