Going on Vacation
WARNING: The review below contains spoilers!
This issue can be considered as an epilogue to the 'E is for Extinction' arc. After Charles' revelation to the world in the last number, lots of new mutants join the institute. It was really nice to see all kinds of different powers and I hope to see more of these teenagers in the future issues.
New X-men #117 is basically made of cheesy, sad, cliche and considerably heavy scenes.
Cheesy moments: Jean's talk with Logan was quite the dramatical scene. She says how sad she is, as Scott has changed a lot over the years, and guess what... the whole thing ends up in a kiss between the two of them!
Sad moments: There's this new mutant in the school called Barnell Bohusk, who looks like a chicken, and, sadly, he can't walk through the hall without hearing the laughter of all the students. I know the whole thing is fictional, but I admit I felt quite bad for the boy.
Cliche moments: While Hank is talking to Xavier, he states that Professor X's DNA is identical to Cassandra Nova's. At that exact moment, Cass takes over Charles' body and subdues Beast. The whole thing sounded really cliche, as just when Hank says that they are genetically twins, "Charles" is like: 'Oh, by the way, Cassandra just took over my body, and right now, I'm gonna kill you!'
Violent moments: Cassandra Nova, in Charles' body, humiliates Hank, saying that he is a brainless beast, etc. It was all pretty heavy, and just to make things worse, she made Barnell beat up Beast with a baseball bat. There was a lot of blood and it made me feel bad for our hairy mutant.
Quitely's artwork was good, although it wasn't amazing. I liked how he drew Beast's pain and anger, and the Shi'ar spaceship. Overall, this comic was like an epilogue to 'E is for Extinction' and a prologue to the next arc, as shown in "Charles"' actions at the end of the issue, which definitely made me excited for the next number. This gets a 6.5/10
