CV's Roundtable User Discussion 007 - Comic Book Solicits: July

Welcome to Comic Vine's "Roundtable User Discussion"! What is a Roundtable User Discussion? A group of CV users, like yourself, virtually met up to talk comic books and comic-related topics. That conversation has been posted here for you guys to see, read and enjoy. After you read our conversation be sure to comment below where you can submit your own opinions after reading ours. This is our seventh discussion so be sure to go back and read our past conversations (Here).

No Caption Provided
I am sora_thekey but you can all call me Geo. I will be moderating this discussion also be giving insight during the conversation. "Sitting" here with me are Roundtable regulars The Dark Huntressxerox-kittyhaydenclaireheroes and CaligulaHi everybody!

xerox-kitty:  Evenin'!

haydenclaireheroes: Hey everyone my name is Haydenclaireheroes and I do videos on this website called Comic Uno and I am a superfan of Spider-Girl.

Caligula: Hi Sora, good to be here again doing two in a row should be a trip. How did you all celebrate yesterday (note: this was done on 4-13-11) being the 50th anniversary of mankind's first trip into space. I watched "First Orbit" a free movie that debuted on You Tube last night. It was breath-taking.

I didn't even know it was the 50th anniversary! I need to watch Star Trek then!

Caligula: That's the spirit Sora!

The Dark Huntress: Hey, good afternoon. Good to be back.

Welcome back to all of you! Let's start because we have a busy platter of comic book-related stuff to cover.

xerox-kitty: "Shall I pre-empt the first question?  The last comic I read was... ;)

Hahaha! You all have "sat" with me here at the Roundtable before, so you all know how this works by now. Like usual, I want to know what comics you have been reading. (Disclaimer for the Readers: We are doing this on Wednesday, so some of us haven't gotten this week's comics yet.)

What was the last comic book, digital comic or web comic that you read, motion comic that you watched or comic book related thing that you did?

 Fear Itself #1
 Fear Itself #1
haydenclaireheroes:
The last comic I read was Fear itself Book One.

 Witchblade: Witch Hunt
 Witchblade: Witch Hunt
The Dark Huntress:
"I FINALLY got around to reading the Witchblade trade that I ordered, containing the Witch Hunt story arc. Written by Ron Marz with art by Mike Choi. It also reaffirmed my belief that although Mike Choi is an absolutely amazing artist, it's Sonia Oback's colors that make his art so insanely gorgeous."

Caligula: "well Sweet Tooth, IDW's Ghostbusters, IDW's Star Trek, IDW's Transformers, IDW's GI Joe, Fearless Dawn, Mouse Guard... and if I win G-Man's Cowboys & Aliens contest, then Cowboys & Aliens."

xerox-kitty: I didn't realise Fear Itself had officially started already. I haven't read any new comics for a couple of weeks since the new releases have been a bit slow.  So I was re-reading old back issues & going through my X-Men: The Animated series DVDs.  Oh, and I finally got my hands on the X-Men & Power Pack mini series, which was such a fun read!

 X-Men and Power Pack
 X-Men and Power Pack
haydenclaireheroes:
X-Men and the Power Pack, is one of my favorite series xerox-kitty!

Caligula: Oops also almost forgot to plug my buddy CheckeredMan's "Tales of the Checkered Man" web comic right here on the vine!

xerox-kitty: Huzzah for CV home grown talent!

haydenclaireheroes: I agree there is so much talent on this website

I agree with that too! CV is home for the coolest nerds/geeks around the world! :)

The Dark Huntress: CV is home to so many amazingly talented people. It kind of blows my mind at times.

Caligula: Why thank you, DH I assume you mean me, the most talented writer and artist of all ;D I kid, I kid.

The Dark Huntress: And the egos, too. They blow my mind as well ;)

 Avengers: The Children's Crusade #5
 Avengers: The Children's Crusade #5
I haven't read much since last week's comics, so my last comic book was Fear itself #1 and Avengers: Children's Crusade #5. Although I did re-read my Avengers Disassembled and House of M trades this week.

haydenclaireheroes: Wow Sora those were the last two comics I read also.

Great Minds think alike Hayden!

Caligula: Do they Sora? I always assumed you and Hayden were the same person :)

Hayden and I have the same taste in comics. Her Comic Uno reviews usually cover everything I thought about the same comics... We aren't the same person, but we are pretty darn close! =P

We have covered our latest comics. Now it's time to the topic at hand! Did you guys read the Fourth Roundtable? We covered comic book Solicitations for June. Well, this week Marvel and DC released their solicits and I think this a perfect opportunity to talk about them.

haydenclaireheroes: I was in the Fourth Roundtable and it was amazing to be part of to talk about the Solications with some great people. Now I am excited to do it again

Caligula: Sounds good, but be forewarned my opinions shall be slightly skewed due to the fact that I'm not up on much Marvel/DC stuff these days.

That's fine Caligula. An opinion is still an opinion. There are five of us here. We should be able to make heads or tails out of all this together. So, has everyone taken a look through the solicits? Well this is how it's going to work. We will talk about one company at the time, and we will cover three categories: The Bad, The Medium (Can also be called "The Meh") and The Good. Which company should we cover first?

haydenclaireheroes: I think Marvel

Caligula: I say Marvel first and save DC for last since I'd rather end on a high note... <shameless Marvel bashing :D>

The Dark Huntress: Let's do Marvel first. For reasons stated and for the fact that I want to save the one solicit I'm psyched for for the end ;)

Marvel

This is going to be interesting! Most of the Marvel comics for July are Fear Itself related, having huge amounts of tie-ins and mini series.

THE BAD

What would you consider Bad from the Marvel solicits? The comics you simply don't want to even touch.

 New Avengers #14
 New Avengers #14
The Dark Huntress:
As for what's bad from Marvel... I won't be touching anything that Brian Micheal Bendis writes, so unfortunately, New Avengers will not be being read by me. I'm an art girl and Deodato's awesome... but this is one of those rare cases where the writing is going to be so abysmal that even the art can't save it.

Caligula: I wanna just drop this on ya... I counted like 24 Fear-Itself tie-ins for July... that is insane. Is anyone seriously that excited about Fear Itself to warrant 24 tie-ins in a single month?

xerox-kitty: The sheer volume of Fear Itself tie-ins are annoying.  It's not as if we can turn a blind eye to it, as it's invading every series. I find that kind of heavy over-saturation extremely off-putting.

 Fear Itself: FF #1
 Fear Itself: FF #1
haydenclaireheroes:
I am liking Fear itself but I am only getting the tie ins of some characters like FF and Spider-Man.

The Dark Huntress: Yeah... that's crazy O_o and also while I'll be waiting for that to come out in trade form. Did not realize the event was going to be that big, but there are also a TON of Flashpoint tie-ins in the DC solicits.

haydenclaireheroes: Ya agreed DC has a ton of Flash Point for July

Caligula: It just seems absurd to me. maybe it's jealousy that the indie's don't do this... but man.

 Avengers #15
 Avengers #15
24 tie-ins is a bit much. Apparently you don't need to read any of them (Like you needed when you read Siege) so I am not worried about the tie-ins. I won't be reading Avengers though. Opposed to DH's opinion on Bendis, I do like his writng but I can't take Romita Jr.'s art.

Editor's Note: The art will not be John Romita Jr's. It will be Chris Bachalo's

The Dark Huntress: Ugh I really dislike JR JR as well

haydenclaireheroes: Sora it is like we are on the same wave lengeth. The reason I dropped Avengers was not for the writing but the terrible art. I actually kind of liked the writing

We are so in sync! Especially since I will be reading the Spider-Man and FF Fear Itself tie-ins too! =P

xerox-kitty: The now-clichéd shadow covers are being over used too.  Why bother soliciting a cover, if 85% of it is going to be a black empty space?  There's no art there to appreciate.

The Dark Huntress: I couldn't agree more, xerox. It's one thing when they're blanking out stuff for previews much like they did with the AoX characters. It's another thing entirely when they're using the same tactic on covers. >_<

 15-Love #2
 15-Love #2
Another book I won't be touching is 15-Love... I don't understand what that is doing in my Marvel comics!

haydenclaireheroes: Yeah it seems like that would be a book for an independent company.

xerox-kitty: Actually... I have to admit that 15-Love caught my eye. I know it's just Millie the Model repackaged, but there's something quirky about it that interests the non-super powered reader in me.  That, and I really like the cover art (but I try not to judge a comic by it's cover ;)

Alright so no one is keen on the Fear Itself flood... Let's talk Medium.

"MEH"

The "Meh" is those books you are not sure of. They might be good, they might be bad but you'll probably will still read.

 Ghost Rider #1
 Ghost Rider #1
Caligula: Well if we are going on the covers I really like the Ghost Rider #1 covers. I might pick it up, I was a Ghost Rider fan when I was younger, and number one seems to be a good jumping on point now. Despite it being one of the 24 Fear Itself tie-ins.

haydenclaireheroes: I probably will not be picking up Ghost Rider because I am not big fan.

Caligula: Well I guess there is at least some good news for us Scottie Young fans this month with Ozma of OZ #8 coming out. I haven't been reading Ozma, but I have read the Oz books in trade and will probably do so with this one as well since this is 8 of 8. I will be anticipating the trade.

 Ozma of Oz #8
 Ozma of Oz #8
xerox-kitty:
It's such a sad cover to Ozma #8.  It made me feel sorry for Dorothy. My biggest 'Meh' is probably the Captain America & Daredevil relaunches.  They went to so much trouble to renumber those titles, and they've already renamed & relaunching them.  I know why Marvel do it (for the boost in sales) but the logic defies me.  I'm sure they'll be good titles, and I do like a lot of the art so far... but they're not screaming 'buy me!' to me.

haydenclaireheroes: I think the bad comics in my opinion is going to be Herc and Ka-Zar, i have a feeling Ka-Zar is not going to last long as a series. His old series is one of those series you get for free at a comic book store trying to sell you something.

Ka-Zar looks awkward.

 Captain America #1
 Captain America #1
The Dark Huntress:  "I'm completely meh about Captain America #1. I'm sure it will be well-written, but I hate the fact that they're bringing Steve back as Cap just because of the freaking movie. This is such BS. I knew they were going to do this as soon as it was announced that Steve was coming back, something that in and of itself also pissed me off. Bringing Steve back negated everything that he died for, it completely takes away from his death and from the meaning of it.
Bucky was doing great as Captain America, he had grown into the role and gave it a fresh spin. He may not be the iconic true blue hero that Steve was, but he was a hero in his own  right.

Steve had his position, Bucky had his. It was a fine system and a nice new twist for both characters. It was a good idea.
This is a freaking horrible one. I hate it as much as I hated them bringing Steve back.  Those were the thoughts that I posted on it  here.

Wolverine and Black Cat: Claws 2 #1
Wolverine and Black Cat: Claws 2 #1
The book I am skeptical about is Wolverine and Black Cat: Claws 2. I never read one, but Felicia and Logan don't seem like a likely pairing.

xerox-kitty: I agree. No-one ever talks about the first series, so how did that demand a sequel? I noticed that in Fear Itself: Wolverine, it mentions that Wolverine has a girlfriend.  I didn't even know he'd been on a date since escaping limbo...?

Caligula: Gotta be honest here the Fear Itself books, other than the Main Book and Ghost Rider will all go into the bad category for me based on the shoddy business of over saturation from them. Everything else other than Ghost Rider and two other books on this list would go into the "Meh" for me. I'll Elaborate on the other two good books when we reach that portion.

 Uncanny X-Men #540
 Uncanny X-Men #540
The Dark Huntress:
I'm also meh about Uncanny. I've heard good things about the issue that Kieron's already done, but I won't be supporting single issue sales of that title until they replace Dodson and Land as the artists.

So let's talk about the Good.

THE GOOD

I know you all want to say it out loud. Especially an X-Men kitty cat I know!

Fear Itself: Uncanny X-Force #1
Fear Itself: Uncanny X-Force #1
The Dark Huntress:
Fear Itself: Uncanny X-Force #1 actually looks really really good. I still need to catch up with my UXF issues (I haven't actually read any...I've been afraid of it being a huge disappointment after the Kyle/Yost/Choi run).

haydenclaireheroes: Well the good has to be Amazing Spider-Man's new infested story arc I am super excited for that. Also, I am liking Ultimate Fallout. That is going to be epic. Something else that caught my eye is Brilliant.

 Muppets Present: Mee the Muppets
 Muppets Present: Mee the Muppets
Caligula:
DISNEY • MUPPETS PRESENTS: MEET THE MUPPETS is going to be awesome, I love the Muppets they are so much win. Plus this going to be a giant 96 pager for six bucks. Looks like a load of fun. RED SKULL #1 (of 5)looks like it could be good. Red Skull is dark villain and that's how I like my villain. but, from the solicit it seems it's going to be a re-telling of his origins, I just hope it's not a retcon for the upcoming movie.

haydenclaireheroes: Well I am not a big Captain America fan so I probably will not buy Red Scull but Muppets is something that looks like a fun read.

 Vengeance #1
 Vengeance #1
xerox-kitty: Tthe ONLY X-titles that I want are X-Factor & Legacy. Real character pieces with defined rosters. I'll most likely get New Mutants too, but I have gradually hated that title since Necrosha (and only get it for my New Mutants collection/shrine). Although Vengeance looks like it might be interesting. At least the write up looks interesting & the cover is a bit... lush

Caligula: Man the Magneto looks wicked! Is that some Dell'Otto there?

xerox-kitty: It sure is, but it's just the cover.  Nick Dragotta is on internal art duties, but I'm not acquainted with his work...

Caligula: Nor am I

The Dark Huntress: Magneto looks beastly there I love the art

Caligula: Man I wish, Gabriele Dell'otto would do some Transformers or Star Trek Covers.

Dell'otto on a Star Trek cover would be AMAZING!

The Dark Huntress: X-Factor is my favorite X-book currently being printed. It's consistently amazing with character-driven stories that are still exciting, great art and an awesome noir feel.

xerox_kitty: X-Factor really is constantly great!  And I can't wait to see what Peter David has in store for Wolfsbane's puppies...!

The Dark Huntress:  Yesssss. It's what I recommend to people who don't want to have to read every title, because it's pretty removed from the rest of them, and who actually want a good story with proper characterization. Unfortunately, that's another series I've been reading in trade, so I'm as current as the issues that were in Second Coming: Revelations.

 X-Men #14
 X-Men #14
Oh and I need to mention X-Men #14. Whatever book that has Emma Frost pinned as crazy means I NEED to read it!

haydenclaireheroes: I was not a big fan of the X-men series because of that whole Vampire Story arc but that cover does look pretty great!

The Dark Huntress: O_______o I will SO be reading that.....I may have to go and buy up the rest of the issues. Yost's writing it, so I have faith that she won't be character assassinated as she has been the past few years in Uncanny. Thaaaaanks Matt Fraction.

xerox-kitty: The new adjective-less series is slowly getting better, but it still feels redundant.  But I don't like that cover.  It doesn't look like Emma, and HOW did they manage to draw a cleavage under a straight jacket???

Caligula: X-Men is out of my league I haven't read any in years. Every time I try I feel so let down, I guess my expectations are to high these days.

haydenclaireheroes: Don't worry Caligula. I am only reading Uncanny X-Men out of all the X-men books out.

 SCHISM #1
 SCHISM #1
 SCHISM #2
 SCHISM #2
xerox, I'm surprised you didn't mention SCHISM on your list of comics you want to read?

xerox-kitty: Schism has boring covers, but the previews showed some absolutely AMAZING internal art!  Other than that, I'm really 'Meh' about it. I'm tired of the current state of the X-Men, and somehow I don't think that Schism is going to change my mind.

 No SCHISM love?

The Dark Huntress: I'm neutral about Schism at this point. I'll wait to read it before I judge, but I pretty much agree with XK's sentiments. YES! Just scrolled down to the bottom of the solicits. New X-Factor trade. Does happy dance. And Legacy.....and Collision........O_o big shopping list.

Caligula: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #665 has an awesome cover, but I don't know how much I'll actually like the story. Probably not much.

I think the present Spider-Man stories are amazing, so I have faith that Spider-Island will be great.

haydenclaireheroes: Well I hear that MJ might get powers. At least that is what it looks like in the previews, but ya I use to hate the Amazing Spider-man stories because of Brand New Day but I have to say they are getting much better and now I am actually excited for a story arc.

Caligula: Well the reason I say this is I'm out of the Spider-Man loop. And the whole FF thing seems intimidating for a starting point. Regardless Spider-Man has never been my biggest interest.

haydenclaireheroes: FF is not a great starting point for Spider-Man but for the Fantastic Four it is

xerox-kitty: It seems strange that two of Marvel's biggest properties are in such a state that the majority of fans have been unhappy for a few years... but little has been done to rectify the problem.

Caligula: I agree XK, I was a huge X-Men fan in the 90's but these modern versions seem so bland at best, and gut wrenchingly awful to old schoolers like me. What's worse is Marvel doesn't seem to get it.

Marvel seems to be appealing to new readers... Rather than the ones that have stuck with them for years.

Alright, we have lingered in the Marvel/July pool long enough. Time to hop on over to DC Comics!

DC Comics

haydenclaireheroes:  DC Time

THE BAD

Why not talk about the bad. The books we won't touch *COU<tie-ins>GH*

xerox-kitty: Oh look, there's a plethora of Flashpoint tie-ins... And a handful of comics with blacked out shadow figures.  Yet again... *yawn*

The Dark Huntress: What turns me off immediately about the DC solicits is the fact that (like Fear Itself) there are soooooooooo many Flashpoint tie-ins. There's honestly nothing there that I hate, although there's a lot that I wouldn't go out of my way to pick up.

Caligula: 17 Flash Point tie-ins be my count, not quite at Fear Itself levels but darn close. It is still far too many tie-ins for a single month.

haydenclaireheroes: I agree with Dark Huntress 100%, ya like Fear itself I am only going to by the ones that interest me not all of them. Far from all of them

Flashpoint: Abin Sur - The Green Lantern #2
Flashpoint: Abin Sur - The Green Lantern #2
The only tie-in I am interested in is the Abin Sur one... and even now I'm not sure if I'm going to buy it. Also I'm VERY VERY new to DC Comics. So I won't be reading any of the 70s Reprints.

Caligula: All of the Lantern stuff has gotten out hand for me, I was following it then Brightest Day kind of killed the Lantern thing for me. I still love the Lanterns but I think they have reached almost the level Deadpool has in Marvel of being in too many books.

xerox-kitty: I'm glad Caligula said that about the Lanterns. It seems that DC has spent a couple of years being green... which isn't easy.

The Dark Huntress: I'm a Lantern fan and a Geoff Johns fan in general... I've been told the reason I don't hate/notice the retcons is because I'm not familiar enough with the continuity (which I'm not, as his run and GLC is the only Lantern stuff I've read). I've read the first seven issues of Brightest Day and honestly... it's meh.

haydenclaireheroes: I like some of the Lantern stuff but I am only a fan of Hal so I am not a fan of the Corp series or Emerald Warrior.

xerox-kitty: The 'Big Two' are definitely in competition in July. I honestly don't know which crossover will be better; better in quality or better in sales. But it seems like a good way of putting off new readers. They just wont know where to start!

When we did the fourth Roundtable I said I was more interested in Flashpoint than Fear Itself, but after reading the first Fear itself issue... I favor Fear Itself more.

So let's talk "Meh"!

"MEH"

What books are you skeptical about?

haydenclaireheroes: I am Meh about the 70 reprints. They look interesting but not too interesting

 Legion of Super Heroes #15
 Legion of Super Heroes #15
The Dark Huntress:
Legion of Super-Heroes. I've read the first three or so issues of it and honestly, I'm completely meh. The art is okay. The story is okay, but nothing screams "READ ME" to me. I much preferred Vol. 5 (the Threeboot volume), where they're all teenagers. I have every trade for it.

 Wonder Woman #613
 Wonder Woman #613
xerox-kitty:
Probably Wonder Woman. The cover is beautiful & the idea of two Wonder Women is interesting, but the write-up is off putting "Even if she wins, she loses!".  This isn't a 1980's movie, so why try to advertise it like one?

The Dark Huntress: I'm actually really enjoying Wonder Woman right now. Started reading with issue 601.

Caligula: WONDER WOMAN #613 -Wondie would probably be my biggest Meh, I feel DC is trying to hard to make her hip. And while I was stoked at first the more of the new Wondie stuff that hits seems so lazy. It's like DC was excited for her re-vamping at first, then when the Hardcore wondie fans didn't like it and the other readers who didn't read her books still don't read them, they seem to have dropped it and are just going through the motions now.

haydenclaireheroes: I actually just dropped Wonder Woman becuase the series just kind of never interested me enough to buy every month

Caligula: That's always been Wonder Woman's biggest problem Hayden. The writers who write her books don't seem to know what to do to keep people interested, almost every time she gets a new writer people get excited but then it just putters off in obscurity again.

haydenclaireheroes: Very True Caligula.

The Dark Huntress: I have a thing for mythology, so it really really appeals to me.

xerox-kitty: I like Wonder Woman, I like the mythology in modern day society angle, and I like the new outfit. It seems that the quick re-introduction of the 'old' Wonder Woman is in response to a lot of negative backlash, even though it was an inevitable story that would happen eventually. But does she really deserve such a bad write-up?  It's just too tacky.

The Dark Huntress: I liked the new angle a LOT and I agree about the tacky write-up.

 Power Girl #26
 Power Girl #26
Hahaha! I just read Power Girl's Solicit:

Power Girl is in the big leagues now – and the First Annual “Power Girl Convention” has asked her to attend! But is she ready to meet her #1 fan? How about when that fan decides to keep P.G. around as her best friend and personal bodyguard – forever?

I probably won't buy the book, but that sounds interesting!

The Dark Huntress: LOL

Well, I am very interested to know what DH is so excited about in the DC Comics section. So what do you guys say if we talked Good?

THE GOOD

The Dark Huntress:  Okay. For me the good are always these: Birds of Prey, Supergirl, Secret Six. I have a few others I love, but those are always at the top of my list. The solicit that has me ridiculously excited is Red Robin #25. The return of Cassandra Cain. I'm a HUGE fan and have been really disappointed with her lack of use lately. I even made a topic about it as soon as Gambler showed me the solicit (to say he's a fan is a bit of an understatement).

haydenclaireheroes: I am excited for the War of Green Lantern Aftermath but the only disappointment is that Geoff Johns is not writing it. Also my three favorite series for DC Batgirl, Superboy, and Teen Titans. But if I had to pick one I was most excited for is Teen Titans because of Superboy Prime being in it and that is going to be interesting.

The Dark Huntress: I haven't read War of the Lanterns yet, I need to catch up with my GL stuff first :(

Caligula: Well for me it's going to be all of the 70's reprints. I love old school, that just me. BATGIRL #23 is going to be good, it always is because Bryan Q. Miller knows Batgirl, he gets the character. He hasn't disappointed me yet so I'm going to have faith that he will keep up with expectations. and of course the only DC book i'm really following  is BATMAN INCORPORATED #9 Still on board for Batman Inc. 9 issues in and it's still the only big two comic I'm following loyally.

The Dark Huntress: YES! I forgot Batgirl. I love that series.

haydenclaireheroes: Caligula completely agree with you for Batgirl. My expectations of that title has never been let down

 Batman Inc. #9
 Batman Inc. #9
Batman Inc. Hasn't been doing it for me... I'm thinking about dropping it!

The Dark Huntress: I haven't actually read it yet.

 Batgirl #23
 Batgirl #23
haydenclaireheroes
: I hope we can all agree that Batgirl is an AWESOME series.

Caligula: Really Batgirl is easily an the most complete and consistent book going for the big two. I would argue that it's actually more well written that the Batman books. It's a shame not very many people are on board yet. If you aren't reading Batgirl, you are missing out the brilliance of Bryan Q. Miller. He is a true comic writer in the vein of old school guys like Moore and Eisner.

I dropped Batgirl after the second issue. I might have to get the trades for it now!

Caligula: You are a blasphemor Sora :D

haydenclaireheroes: You have to get the trades her series is awesome and since we both link the same things Sora. I am sure you will love the series.

I trust your taste in comics hayden... I will buy Batgirl!

The Dark Huntress: Caligula, I think there are people who are just opposed to Stephanie as a character due to her days as Spoiler. Honestly, she's one of my favorite DC characters and Bryan ALWAYS gets her right. He knows how to characterize everybody he writes properly and it's one of the best DC books out there right now. He reminds me a bit of PAD, actually.

Batman:  Arkham City #4
Batman:  Arkham City #4
xerox-kitty:
The good has GOT to be Paul Dini...Starting with Batman: Arkham F***ING City!  It looks like it'll  be a great series (even if it is a game tie-in), but there's also something appealing about the cover; seeing Batman knock the snot out of an army of Fantomex's ;) And then there's Zatanna.  I get the feeling that she is to Paul Dini as Catwoman is to Adam Hughes.  They just naturally go hand-in-hand with those characters.  But also I like Zatanna's style.  She's got a bit of class, ha a quirky power, and can kick some but while wearing a top hat.  What's not to love?   I'll admit that the 'Maid of Magic' fighting for her life isn't a great solicitation. But on trial against the Spectre is a bit alluring.

 Zatanna #15
 Zatanna #15
Caligula:
Yeah I always get tricked into buying Zatanna's books for the covers... then I usually find the stories to be bland. but damned if the art isn't amazing.

xerox-kitty: So, it's not the fact that you're not attracted to the lovely long legs in fishnets & the swanky top hat then, Caligula? ;)

Caligula: ah XK you know me better than I know myself, you should be a psychiatrist.:D

xerox-kitty: I dropped Birds of Prey when the printing went wrong & I ended up buying Batgirl by mistake  I like both titles, but I was annoyed that I'd have to rebuy the issue to get the story that I couldn't be bothered to fork out more cash for it.

The Dark Huntress: I'd suggest getting the trade that contains that issue then, maybe? It's a great series and Gail Simone knows how to write strong female characters.

haydenclaireheroes: I agree with you Gail Simone is a great writer and knows how to write strong female characters.

We have covered a lot of books. I think it's time to wrap this conversation up so that whoever is reading will give their own input on the comments below. I just have one last question for you guys. If you could only have one book for the whole month of July which would you pick? Remember just ONE book for all of July!

 X-Factor: Scar Tissue
 X-Factor: Scar Tissue
The Dark Huntress:
Just one... The X-Factor trade that's coming out. :D

X-Factor is in upheaval as one member leaves, another arrives, and Rictor and Rahne finally have it out over the identity of her baby’s father! Plus: a high-school student’s suicide of triggers X-Factor’s most personal case. And when a man is killed by what seems to be vampires, can the team separate fact from fiction? Then, Mayor J. Jonah Jameson thrusts NYC’s premiere detective agency into the midst of a murder investigation, but the trail seems to lead
them straight back to…Jonah himself?! Collecting X-FACTOR (1986) #213-219.

I knew you were going to pick a trade!

The Dark Huntress: Loopholes FTW. ;)

The Amazing Spider-Man #666

haydenclaireheroes:
If I had to pick one book for the month of July I would pick Amazing Spider-Man #666 because of the whole Infested story arc

Super-Star writer Dan Slott and fan-favorite Spidey artist Stefano Caselli are back! New York has been INFESTED and the web grows as it gets ready to explode into SPIDER-ISLAND! Normal people are getting Spider-Powers! But not all of them realize that with great power must also come ….you know the rest. Okay, sure we often say Peter Parker’s life will never be the same. But listen, pal, we’ve never been more serious. Heroes and villains are crawling all over Manahttan and no one knows why. This will change everything for Pete, for Spidey…and possibly for YOU! Look at it this way…If EVERYONE’S a Spider-Man… then no one is.

Caligula: I probably wouldn't choose any of these if I had my indie options laid out. But since I don't. I'd say it's a toss up for Batgirl or Batman Inc. and to everyone reading this and everyone following me if you aren't reading Batgirl, you need too.

Is an exclusive girls’ finishing school a secret training ground for teenaged assassins? Find out the truth as Batgirl undertakes her most dangerous
mission yet at the request of Batman.

“Screwed” takes on a whole new meaning for Stephanie Brown as The Reapers speed up their nefarious plan, going toe-to-toe with Batgirl in the heart of Blackgate. But who are the Reapers working for, and why? Answers to both those questions and more await Batgirl as “The Lesson” concludes.

haydenclaireheroes: Totally Agree Caligula. Batgirl is a needed series to read. It really is great.

Just one? You're asking me to choose between the birth of Wolfsbane's child & Legion's mountain of personalities! I think I'd have to choose the Harvey Dent way & flip a coin...

X-Factor headquarters is under siege! As the birth of Wolfsbane’s baby draws near, demonic forces pound at their door, desperate to steal the child away. How will X-Factor battle the supernatural? Salvation may just arrive in a very familiar form…

Not only have the X-Men escaped from the Age of X, but so have some of the most dangerous monsters from Legion’s psyche!
Desperate to hunt them down, Legion and a small team of X-Men leave the safety of Utopia to find them. But it may not be long before they find themselves in over their heads...

haydenclaireheroes: The Harvey Dent method is very effective

 Ultimate Fallout #1
 Ultimate Fallout #1
I am going to plug in Ultimate Spider-Man (like I always do) into this discussion and say Ultimate Fallout #1-3. They are all solicited together so I am considering it a book on it's own. Loopholes right?
The End before The Beginning.

The Dark Huntress: Nicely done, Sora.

haydenclaireheroes: He learned from the master
