Out of Context

Some covers bring stuff to mind at first glance. Sometimes it's a joke, a story idea, or how that cover might have applied to another storyline. This is just my spot to put those covers.

List items

  • (2/98) Superboy #48. Shazam.

  • ....(9/84) Superman #399. "The Man Who Saw Superman Die!" ...Pft, we've all seen that.

  • (3/84) Superman #393. Deleted scene from The Dark Knight Returns. :^/

  • (2/78) Superman #320. SUPES: "Great moons of Krypton! Solomon Grundy is stealing my cape! But-- WHY?" ...I think a better question is: is Superman so used to giant men taking his clothes that he didn't notice until Grundy was leaping from the sky tram?

  • (6/76) Superman #300. "Superman 2001." This is one of those stories that's going to make us ticked off that we don't have flying cars, isn't it?

  • (11/73) Superman #269. GOG!

  • (8/73) Superman #266. ...and the loser goes to the Island of Misfit Toys FOREVER! :^/

  • (2/48) Superman #50. ...and then the kids tried it.

  • (8/57) Superman #115. "Our last employer called us 'Fat,' 'Tall' and 'Hillbilly,' so we quit and came to work for you, Superman."

  • (1/85) Superman #403. ...The Spot comes to the DC Universe!

  • (6/85) Superman #408. ...Superman convinces himself that Coast City was not his fault.

  • (9/81) Hulk Annual #10. BANNER: "It can't BE! I'm becoming the Hulk-- --but I'm also changing into... CAPTAIN UNIVERSE! And I'm fighting MYSELF!" ...IMO, this is still one of the best single issues EVER.

  • (3/84) Blue Ribbon Comics #6. ...Just a few more months of table dancing like this, and the Fox could finally have that operation.

  • (7/78) Karate Kid #15. ...Yes, Karate Kid is so bad, he can punch through the time barrier...Seems like that should be a Chuck Norris joke.

  • (8/43) Superman #23. ...You know why this is a Superman cover? Because they would've just fired at Aquaman.

  • (11/81) Star Wars #53. ...Power to travel the stars, and still climbing a rope ladder to get aboard?

  • The HOUSE OF M ending that nobody wants to talk about! Before she could speak those three fateful words - "No more mutants" - Magneto has the Scarlet Witch KILLED! Pietro in torment! Shocker of a lifet... huh? Whassat?... 1968?! Oh... Avengers #49 (2/68).

  • (9/77) Human Fly #1. ...The Human Fly dance step never quite caught on (probably because of the scepter), but Steve Rude's The Moth flipped the colors on the belt buckle design for their Rocket Comics logo.

  • (11/90) Doom Patrol #38. They look tough, but if you yell "Moby Dick" at them, they fall right to sleep. ...Stupid, stupid rat-creatures.

  • (5/04) Legion #31. ...WTH is Brainiac 5 holding?! PHOTOS?! IN THE 31ST CENTURY?!

  • (12/45) All-Star Comics #27. ...Okay, that's just cruel - it's not like he can properly RETURN that salute.

  • (6/46) All-Star Comics #29. Is he...? I think this guy took "F*** the world" a little too seriously.

  • (4/83) All-Star Squadron #20. ...Elseworlds: Alan Scott is the GL who loses Coast City, during Reign of the Supermen. How does this play out for the Corps, Oa, and Parallax? Well, the All-Stars look worried...

  • (7/84) All-Star Squadron #35. COVER: In this issue: an All-Star DIES! ...1st: Hero death was a big deal back then. 2nd: It was the RED BEE. The frickin' Red. Bee. I know you all miss him terribly, but now you know: you can blame ROY THOMAS for the death of the Red Bee. Really, Roy? Why the Red Bee? ...Pft. Even the heroes were like, "His power was to control bees...what was he thinkin'...what we were thinkin', to let him fight...with bees?" Seriously: he kept a TRAINED BEE in his belt buckle. Really.

  • (3/85) All-Star Squadron #43. As I see Amazing-Man about to jump into the fight, I find myself wondering: if he grabs hold of the Gravity Rod, can he become a living Gravity Rod? (And: wasn't it called a Cosmic Rod later?)

  • (1/76) Beowulf #5. Waaaay before Cowboys & Aliens.

  • (7/75) Justice, Inc. #2. "The Deadliest Man Alive?" In that outfit? I don't think so. Later, in the New Universe's Star Brand, Ken Connel would wear the Avenger's suit, seen here. Over in NU's Justice, Justice would wear the Avenger's look, but without the chalk white skin.

  • (date?) Hero Camp #4. Grape Ape is back...and he's pissed.

  • (1/07) Superman #180. I told a guy who has worked for DC about this great fanfic idea I had, where a vampire bites Superman, and burns up from the inside out. Within three months, this issue came out, with the exact scene I described to him.

  • (9/70) Aquaman #53. COVER: "Is California Sinking?" Nah, just Coast City.

  • Wonder Woman #95. Does it look like she's about to break Steve's neck to anyone else?

  • Green Lantern #61. Oh, that's the pot calling the kettle black, isn't it?

  • GL #64. Looks like an early version of the Red Lanterns.

  • GL #150. I remember a coworker telling me how cool he thought black power rings would be, about 15 years before Blackest Night was even being talked about. The following week, I found this GL cover and had to get it for him. He thought it was the coolest thing ever (that day).

  • GL #193. I have long been convinced that John Stewart was supposed to have become Parallax, before a last-minute change by DC. This is how that could have ended.

  • DC Comics Presents #32. Oh, that scoundrel Cupid. If only Steve & Lois had known what was coming later.
