The story of doing the RIGHT thing.
Hulk has a new ongoing series! So let me ask you a question, "Who shot the Hulk?!" Written by Mark Waid with artwork by Mark Bagley (pencils), Andrew Hennessy (inks), and Jason Keith (colors).
The Good
I think the best part about this series, is how Mark Waid set it up. This series comes right after the events of INDESTRUCTIBLE HULK final issue, so it's good to see that this new series has some support to draw on. Waid introduced us right off the bat that we have a critically injured Bruce Banner and one man here to save him!
I loved how Mark Waid really built up tension towards the end of this issue. With Dr. Aaron Carpenter it was great to see how he was having conflicting thoughts of whether or not he should kill Banner or implant a device that'd give power to control the Hulk's transformations. It really tied in well with his flashbacks of how he remembers Bruce Banner and the Hulk in the early days and how he's trying to do the RIGHT thing now. As he feels a bit guilty because he wasn't as nice to Bruce Banner before he became the Hulk. So it was really great to see this moral dilemma within Carpenter and how it led to a good story.
The art team did an outstanding job with the artwork. The artwork did remind me of the current G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero series, just a little bit, and it took me a little while to get used to it after thinking of that one fact. However, in the end, I enjoyed the artwork.
The Bad
What I didn't like about this issue, is that the identities of the people that shot Bruce are unknown. They mentioned they weren't S.H.I.E.L.D., so that adds a bit of mystery, but I'd have liked if their identities were revealed. Because it would've given us readers knowledge that the Hulk/Bruce doesn't have and it could've led to Bruce/Hulk hunting them down. In this issue however, Bruce gets severe brain damage and it might be irreversible. So now the pace and tone of this series has shifted from serious choices of whether or not to do the right thing with guys in black suits pulling the strings to we must find out if Banner/Hulk will be okay after their brain being damaged! I predict this will last for quite a while in this series, at least until issue 10 (at least). If things took a different path I think this would've been a flawless issue, however only time will tell.
The Verdict
If you wanted MOAR HULK, you have MOAR HULK!!! It takes place after the events of INDESTRUCTIBLE HULK and it's an excellent read for those that have been following this series. It has it's high point and it's low points this first issue, but it puts my mind at ease that more Hulk is good Hulk. Anyway 3 out of 5. Until next time!
