Superman: The Life of the Man of Steel:
Part One:
Jor El walked into his laboratory. “Is the rocket ready?” He asked his wife, Lara.
“It’s ready.” Lara mumbled, her head bowed, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Jor El, how do you know if he will live?” She asked, placing her child into the rocket. “Kal El is merely a baby.”
Jor El fired the rocket, and Jor El and Lara took each other in their arms. “We have to hope.” Jor El whispered, so sweetly in her ear. The two kiss, and Jor El says softly “one final embrace.” Lara cries heavily, as Jor El fights back tears. The earthquakes are coming, everything is going to end. In a deafening explosion, Krypton is no more, and baby Kal El drifted into space.
Years Later:
Superman had flown above Metropolis for six months now, and Lex Luthor was already jealous.
Lex had his hands behind his back, looking down as Superman fights one of his robots below. Mercy walked in on Lex watching Superman.
“Lex….what are you doing?”
“He’s beautiful, isn’t he?” Lex stated, without bothering to avert his gaze.
“I’m not too sure what you mean…”
“Superman…he’s beautiful.” Lex marveled. “Such raw…untapped power...” Lex let out a deep sigh. “He’s there champion,” he states cheerfully, “which will make my victory over him so much sweeter.” Lex grinned.
Sparks flew through the air as Superman tore the head off the robot. He quickly flew away, not staying for the thanks. He was late for a meeting anyway.
He had met The Legion of Super Heroes when he was a kid, and they had guided him ever since. He couldn’t wait for his next meeting.
“Welcome, Superman.” Saturn Girl greeted him telepathically as he touched down to his fortress.
“Hello, Saturn Girl.” Superman thought back. Lightning Lad and Superman shook hands, and Cosmic Boy and him shared a hug.
“What’s the news this time?” Superman asked.
“Kal,” Cosmic Boy said, his voice taking a worried tone, “this is what you’ve been training for…the coming of Darksied is near.”
Superman stepped back, shocked. “Wh-what?”
“It’s okay to be afraid.” Saturn Girl thought.
“We’ll help you train to beat him.” Lightning Lad reassured him. “We’ve programmed this sparring session specifically for it.”
After a brief training session, Superman flew off to the Daily Planet. The same words repeated in his head: Darksied is coming….Darksied is coming...Darksied is coming. Finally, he said to himself, “Wait, who is Darksied?”
