I don't ordinarily write poetry, but I fell asleep listening to the Aesop Rock last.fm channel, and when I woke up, this came out of my fingers.
Falling Asleep Listening to Aesop Rock
There’s radioactive spiders laying eggs in my ear
Except instead of drinking blood they make my dreams disappear
So I swap sleep for Coffee, black and without depth,
No Starbucks cream curl spiral to fantasy death
Behind my eyelids Technicolor dervish drinks to my health
Then dances drunkenly, spitting spinning pictures of stealth
Drunken monkey Shaolin footfalls deaf in my ears
Round and round and round until they disappear
So I swap sleep for Coffee, black and none shall pass these pitiless depths,
Sun Ra soundtracking speed lines from my Getaway Car—away my fantasy death!
I awaken shaken beneath white cotton sheets, the picture of health
And turn Ian off and get up quiet, trying not to wake her—be with me, stealth.
