we don't see how MM lost (it happened off panel) we only know Grodd beat him and is restraining him with his mental powers, keeping him chained up like Princess Leia in Star Wars or a dog etc. If you want details you will probably have to message Jeff Lemire, he wrote the story.
@sunman: Grodd didn't beat him, he even mentioned that J'onn was too strong for that too happen. Captain Atom most likely knocked him out and Grodd took advantage while he was unconscious.
Grodd after all was one of the inmates he was keeping telepathically docile. If he was more powerful than him he'd have just broken out beforehand.

so that doesn't necessarily mean Martian Manhunter was too strong for him, it could mean that he couldn't overcome the prison counter measures and whatever added defenses Martian Manhunter had in the prison at his disposal. We don't know how the fight went down, but Grodd's clearly restraining Manhunter by himself with only his mental prowess, which could mean he is superior to MMin that regard keeping him from phasing out or attacking mentally and physically is an impressive feat.
Maybe Grodd just needed Atom to bust the cells and defenses open while he fought MM telepathically and he was just biding his time till Captain Atom agreed to help. It's un clear based on all we know at the moment. But it appears that MM could restraint Atom by himself if not for Grodd so just based on the little context we have one might infer Grodd has superior mental capabilities.
@sunman: If J'onn wasn't more powerful than him he wouldn't need Captain Atom's help, he'd just control J'onn into deactivating the facilities holding measures.
