It was good, but not great.
Riddler's on a path for revenge!
The Good
Story by Scott Snyder and Ray Fawkes, written by Ray Fawkes follows Riddler on a path of revenge which creates an amusing .1 story. Ray Fawkes basically went all out and had a bunch of fun with this Riddler issue. Keeping in mind that this is a one-shot issue, that is what all one-shots should achieve. It should be fun and exciting, giving readers a good amount of reading without having to force feed them information they probably already know about the series. So with that in mind, the Riddler story was good but not great. I liked how Fawkes had Riddler wanting to go on a quest of revenge, but is that all relevant with the Riddler's characteristics?
Anyway, Ray Fawkes handled this .1 issue with ease. It really complimented Fawkes' ability as a writer on how he began the issue and ended it without much of a problem.
The artwork by Jeremy Haun was great. I've never seen Haun's art before, so it was great to be introduced to his artwork through this .1 issue.
The Bad
Would the Riddler be about revenge? The Riddler has always struck me, and has been portrayed, as the person that just wants to outwit someone that "appears" to be smarter than him (example Batman). However, with this story and The Riddler wanting to get revenge for his cards being taken away from him in the Asylum, that seems really pathetic especially since he's supposed to be super smart. Sure, it shows that he is human (i guess), but when it's all said and done, this issue's story was enjoyable, but it kinda deviated from what Riddler truly is.
The Verdict
It's another .1 issue that allows you to get in the heads of many fan favorite DC villains. This Riddler issue isn't breaking any new ground, but it was significantly better than the Joker .1 issue. I won't say I'll ever go back and read this for any reason, but I'm glad that I could find some enjoyment in this issue. Ray Fawkes really focused on what was important in a one-shot "special" issue, just having fun and going all out; even though everything doesn't add up correctly. Still, I give this a 3 out of 5.
