    History

    Night of the Living Dead
    Night of the Living Dead

It has been eleven years since Barbara escaped from the farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania. Eleven years since a fortunate stroke of luck sent the young woman tripping over a dead zombie, and out of the grasp of a dozen blood-thirsty ghouls. Barbara was there when Ben was mistakenly shot by the search and rescue team the following morning. She had hoped to bring help to the farmhouse, but instead brought even more death and destruction. Now, in 1981, Barbara and a rag-tag band of survivors have secured themselves inside of a compound fortified by chain-link fences and barbed wire. Barbara still struggles with nightmares of the horror and violence of that evening so many years before, unable to put the past behind her, and move on.

Following a routine scouting mission in a nearby town for food and supplies,

Barbara and her group discover that the living dead have used themselves as as a ramp, enabling them to climb atop one another in order to enter the compound. There is nothing but devastation as far as the eye can see, and Barbara's group proceeds to eliminate the zombies. They find that the remaining survivors barricaded themselves inside of the compound's mess hall, and turned their weapons on themselves, to avoid being eaten alive. It is almost too much for Barbara to bear, and she points her pistol to her temple, preparing to end her life. Before she can pull the trigger, however, Barbara hears the cries of a little girl hiding atop a statue in what used to be the compound's "town square", and rushes to the child's aid.

With little left to lose, Barbara informs the survivors that they are heading to a compound in Washington D.C., where it is rumored by survivor Dr. Peter Cooke that there are drugs that can slow, and even stop, the infection. The group board a school bus, and heads towards Washington. Later, they find their route blocked by dozens of abandoned cars. Dr. Cooke notices from a highway sign that a marina is nearby, recommending that they find a suitable boat, and take the Potomac River to the docks in Arlington, Virginia. Barbara agrees, and soon, the survivors find the marina, seemingly free of zombies. While Barbara and the others look for a suitable boat , one survivor named Laura looks for supplies in the marina's bait shop, and is harpooned by a zombified longshoreman. Barbara shoots the creature, and Laura begs her friend to take her life. Distraught, Barbara, honors her final wish, and shoots her in the head before she can turn into a ghoul.

The remaining survivors find a boat, and make their way across the river

towards Arlington. They discover a raft teeming with the living dead that someone set adrift from a nearby freighter, most likely in an attempt to distance the zombies from anyone still living. One of the ghouls jams the boat's propeller blades, and when Barbara attempts to clear the jam, she is attacked. One of the survivors, Rufus, intervenes, and is pulled into the waters of the Potomac by the ghoul. The boat speeds off, and Rufus is devoured by a school of zombies hidden just beneath the surface of the water. Barbara and the others dock at Arlington, and Dr. Cooke leads the group to Arlington National Cemetery. The doctor locates a hidden control panel located on a mausoleum, and the stone walls open, revealing an elevator. The group enters, and descends to the military compound, below.

The group locates enters the compound, and Dr. Cooke locates the serum for the child. The doctor then shows Barbara and the others a hangar with a space ship in it. He tells them that the threat posed to humanity was not in actuality radioactivity emanating from the Explorer probe to Venus, but the crew aboard the extra-terrestrial craft that had crash-landed in a Nevada desert. One of the aliens had been infected with an unknown virus, and had murdered and consumed it's fellow crew members. Cooke shows the survivors Alex and Derek the specimen, while Barbara tends to the sick child. Dr. Cooke explains the creature was quite alive when they had found it, and the military had lost several men subduing the monster. When Alex asks how it was possible for one ship to cause a worldwide pandemic, the doctor explains that the ship in the hangar was only one of hundreds that had crash-landed to earth all over the world, each one containing infected extra-terrestrial creatures. The ships' self-destruct systems vaporized the ships to protect earth, but the incineration turned the virus from blood-borne to air-borne, reanimating the dead.

Cooke locks Alex and Derek in the lab with the creature, and informs them that

the alien is merely in a state of electrically-induced hibernation. The doctor uses a computer to awaken the zombified extra-terrestrial, and leaves them to their doom. The doctor returns to Barbara and the little girl, who has died as the result of her injury. Cooke then holds Barbara at gunpoint, and orders that she strip. Barbara uses the opportunity to assemble a two-shot Derringer strapped to her wrist inside a pouch, and shoots the doctor before he can rape her. The alien bursts through the wall with the remnants of Derek and Alex in it's teeth. Barbara demands that Cooke kick her her pistol, or die with the rest of them. Dr. Cooke kicks her the gun, and Barbara shoots the alien in the head, killing it.

Barbara turns the pistol on Cooke, and fires.

    Charles "Charlie" Manson

Unfortunately, the weapon is empty, and the doctor turns his own weapon on Barbara. He recommends that they continue what they started, but the little girl that they had attempted to rescue returns from the dead, and tears Cooke's throat out. Barbara runs for her life, and grabs a fire axe for protection. She locates a subway platform, and manually operates the train. Barbara exits the train, and climbs a stairwell to the surface. She finds a doorway, and hesitantly opens it, discovering herself inside a woodshed in the back lawn of the White House. She is confronted by a number of heavily-armed survivors, and their leader tells his group to stand down. When Barbara asks who the man is, he tells her that he is none other than the President of the United States of America, himself. Removing his face mask and goggles, the man is revealed to be Charles "Charlie" Manson, who tells Barbara that she is safe, now.
