Comic Book Question of the Week RESULTS: Favorite Spider-Man Writer

And the winner is...

Way back in 1962, the world was introduced to Spider-Man in the pages of AMAZING FANTASY #15. Now, Peter Parker has become one of the most iconic and recognizable heroes in comic books. Not only does he have a huge movie coming out here in the U.S., but this week, Spidey also stepped back into his costume and kicked off an all new volume. To celebrate Dan Slott's new run, we wanted to reflect on the wall crawler's long history of writers. 10 names were added to the poll (plus an "other" option), and it turns out the winner has done much of his Parker writing with an alternate universe version of the web-slinger. Ladies and gentlemen, the Comic Vine community has selected Brian Michael Bendis as its favorite Spider-Man writer!

No Caption Provided

Yes, Bendis worked with 616 Spider-Man on more than a handful of occasions (hilarious banter about underwear in NEW AVENGERS immediately comes to mind), but being able to completely reinvent such a classic tale is a commendable feat. Tackling such a well-known story is no easy task, yet Bendis managed to do so successfully and eventually turn it into his own engrossing world. Not only has it thrived and been full of excitement over the years, but it's also undergone some massive changes to help make it feel even more unique. It's funny: Spider-Man has decades upon decades of great history in the 616 universe, yet at the end of the day, it's the 1610 version of Spider-Man that has apparently left the strongest impact on Comic Viners. Let's see why one of them gave their vote to Bendis.

Viner Post for Brian Michael Bendis is by spiderrmonkey2099

"I voted Bendis because he's written so much Spidey, and all that I've read of it (I'm still in the Parker years of his USM run, but I'm close to the end of that) is consistently some of the best writing for Spidey that I've read. He breathed new life into the character with his reimagined Spider-Man and Spidey universe. Bendis' run on USM will probably go down as one of the all-time greats, like Stan Lee's run on the character or Claremont's run on X-Men.

Stan Lee would be a close second. I'm generally not a huge fan of Silver Age comics, but Stan Lee's Spidey run is simply amazing (pun intended).

Third would be JMS simply because of his first one or two story arcs on the title. The Morlun saga and the issues where Aunt May discovers Peter's secret are among the best Spidey issues I've ever read. From what I hear, the quality of the stories decline as his run goes on, but I can't really comment on that as I haven't had a chance to finish his run yet.

Then, to round out my top 5, I would say David Michelinie and Peter David. Michelinie wrote several of my favorite Spidey tales (and some of the first I ever collected), including some memorable bouts with the symbiotes, Lizard, and even Ultron. And Peter David is on my list because of Spider-Man 2099. Such a great look at what a future Spidey might look like. I know he also had a run on Spectacular Spider-Man, which includes popular story arc The Death of Jean DeWolfe, but unfortunately I've not had a chance to read any of that run yet (hopefully soon though...)."

Here's the complete poll results.

Since Bendis has been declared the winner, let's take some extra time to celebrate his work with Spider-Man. So, go ahead and share with us your favorite bit of Spidey banter that Bendis wrote below. See you next Tuesday for an all-new question, Viners!

Even though many people are talking negatively about both Bendis and Slottthere books are selling in huge numbers. More famous people would in general have a bigger base for a vocal minority. I assume that most people are also most familiar with Bendis and Sloth since they are the present writers. An old Spider-Man fan are not likely to be that much into discussing Spider-man. I also remember one poll showing that showed that comicvine had a pretty young demographic even though it is not scientific it is a hint that the site have a younger audience. With a younger person they changes a higher that they are only familiar with the most present runs and maybe some of the more known runs/writers/artist.

Didn't vote since I didn't see the poll. I would have voted for either Peter David or David Michelinie.

Annoyingly long storytelling aside, USM started out pretty good. It had my favorite origin story for Eddie Brock. (The Venom symbiote, not so much)

It so did.
616 Venom is silly....(or at least Eddie Brock)
I loved the personal connection to Peter and his dad.

Surprised Bendis won. When I voted Slott was in the lead. I only read some of Slott's work on Spider-Man and I really like his stories like New Ways to Die, Superior Spider-Man, Ends of the Earth, & with Bendis, I read the first 2 trades of the first 2 volumes of new Avengers & I really liked those stories. I also read a couple issues of Ultimate Spider-Man here and there, read the first two volumes of Miles Morales being Spider-Man & I like those. I really love Spider-Men. Can't wait for Spider-Men 2 & Spider-Verse(Is that what the upcoming Spider-Man story with all the Spider-Men coming together to kick Morlun's ass is called?).

I didn't vote since Joe Kelly wasn't up there but I loved Strazynski's work until he decided to Norman knock up Gwen. . . terrible and about half were before my time and most of their wiki pages don't give great details so I would have liked some notes on what they did for Spider-Man or what arcs they wrote . . . hint-hint mods

Stan Lee

Major Stories

  • Spider-Man's Origin
  • Face to Face with the Lizard
  • Spider-Man Goes Mad
  • Master Planner Saga
  • The End of the Green Goblin
  • Horns of the Rhino
  • Spider-Man No More
  • Harry Osborn is on Drugs
  • etc etc

Created Spider-Man and most of his major villains, his supporting cast, his job, defined the character etc etc

J.M.Dematteis

Major Stories

  • The Child Within
  • Kraven's Last Hunt
  • The End of Vermin
  • Best of Enemies
  • Funeral Arrangement
  • The Gift

Tried to write a more mature Spider-Man, experimented with psychology and symbolism.

Wrote the most important Harry Osborn arc

Can veer into grim-dark at times but some interesting stories taking Spider-Man in different directions.

David Michelinie

Major Stories

  • Powerless
  • Venom
  • The Return of the Sinister Six
  • A Matter of Life and Debt
  • The Wedding

Solid, long serving writer that did a lot crowd-pleaser action stories, created Venom (doing most of his early stories and character work), created Carnage, brought Flash Thompson and Black Cat back into the fold, worked a lot on Pete's marriage and relationship

Did a lot of melodrama with Mary Jane and nude modelling and having her own stalker etc etc

Gerry Conway

Major Stories

  • The Death of Gwen Stacy
  • The First Clone Saga
  • The Punisher Strikes Twice

Took over from Stan Lee, killed Gwen Stacy, created the Punisher.

Only OK writer overall IMO, he coasts along on the Death of Gwen Stacy, which was one of the greatest Spider-Man stories of all time, but other than that most of his run is not that interesting and is kind of silly (Aunt May marrying Doctor Octopus, Spider-Mobile)

Peter David

Major Stories

  • Death of Jean Dewolff
  • Point of View
  • The Commuter Cometh
  • Return of the Sin Eater
  • Cult of Love

Another smart writer like Dematteis, except without the tendency to slip into grim-dark, liked to do character study style stories as well as the occasional humourous one-shot here and there. Good writer.

Roger Stern

Major Stories

  • Origin of the Hobgoblin
  • And the Cat Came Back
  • Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaught
  • The Kid who Collects Spider-Man
  • Let Fly these Aged Wings
  • Wings of Vengeance

After a few years of passable stories Stern came along with the goal of bringing the comic back into line with its earlier Stan Lee days, action, fun, good character work and some intrigue here and there. He also brought Spider-Man's power level back up to its impressive older days (the last few writers had written him having trouble with peak humans), he brought the goblins back into the fold by creating Hobgoblin, did a ton of character work and much-needed back-story for the Vulture, and he pushed the Spider-Man and Black Cat rivalry into becoming an actual relationship.

Tom Defalco

Major Stories

  • Saga of the Alien Costume
  • Sins of the Father
  • Whatever Happened to Crusher Hogan
  • Spider-Girl

Took over from Stern, did a lot of important character development for Mary Jane, filling in most of her backstory and having her find out Pete was Spider-Man, did a lot of work with the Alien Symbiote (before it merged with Venom), created Silver Sable, very respectable writer (at least during his run's first half anyway), worked on Spider-Girl comic for most of its run (I think).

I didn't vote because I've really never been a reader of Spider-Man and probably never will. But I will say the character has had some great animated series. And I had no idea that Dematteis (is that really the right way to spell that? I always want to capitalize the "M" and put the "I" before the "E") had written Spidey.

I do also want to say that Bendis' run on Avengers was a lot better than the mess that is what the current writer is doing.

Oh man! I can't believe I missed this poll! So many great writers. We live in a golden age of Spidey tales. Would of been a hard one to pick. I think I might of voted for Dan Slott and here's why:

On Stracynski:

I loved Stracynski's work in Supreme Power and I love how he revealed to Aunt May Spidey's identity and generally transformed May's character into one of strength which totally retconned her character and for the better. However, retconning the origin of Spidey's powers or at least casting them into question was a bogus move in my opinion. Spider-man is a scientist and the title is one of science fiction not supernatural.

On Bendis:

Loved Ultimate Spider-man and the Ultimate universe in general. Contemporising canonical Spidey tales was a fantastic opportunity to bring cohesiveness to decades of ad hoc writing from a plethora of writers. Bendis had the privilege to try and I think that he did a tremendous job. The way he wrote the dramas of youth always felt genuine and compelling while the villains and supporting characters have never felt so realistic and nuanced.

Finally on Slott:

The current age of Spider-man, in my opinion, has been the best Spidey in all of history. We saw not only the return to science fiction themes but a revelry of science that could only have been done better if it were written by Hickman and then I wonder if we could of retained the adventure side of the title. To be fair the current age cannot be solely attributed to Slott with great writers like Mark Waide and Zeb Wells but as I understand it Slott has had an overarching influence and should be commended.

If I may make a suggestion, how about including the greatest issues or storylines done by the writers? Looking at the results, it seems more focused on recent writers and the creators. I didn't realize Peter David wrote "The Death of Jean DeWolff" until checking out the comic book resources list of top 50 spidey storylines. And if you're looking for a spidey with a funny story, check out ASM v1 #267. I don't think it was until the early 90s that credits appeared on the covers of the comics so people (namely me) might not have realized who was writing.
