    Origin

Zelos Wilder possibly has one of the most complicated, if not the most complicated, origin in Tales of Symphonia. Zelos was born to a woman named Mylene Wilder and the at the time Chosen of Tethe'alla at in a forced relationship by the Oracle of Cruxis. He would grow up in a mansion in the Tethe'alla captial, Meltokio. With his mother already loving someone while being forced into a marriage, and his father already being another relationship, Zelos grew up neglected and distant from his parents, and only on occasion would his mother show him any maternal attention. The only real and constant paternal figure in Zelos' life would be the family butler, Sebastian. But because of his status as son to the Chosen, Zelos grew up in an aristocratic and uncaring society, this would further dampen Zelos' value of himself. Zelos' father had a half-elf mistress, and she would give birth to Zelos' half sister, Seles Wilder. Zelos and his Seles were rather close as children and often played with each other. Zelos and Seles' father would die at some point during their childhood and Seles would end up developing ailments. Seles' mother devised a plan to give her and her daughter a better life. Since Zelos was the first born child, he inherited the title of Chosen from his father, but if he were to die, Seles would become the Chosen and would then be granted the status and riches that comes with it.

Zelos was in the snow city of Flanoir, and he would mention this as the first day he saw snow. While Zelos was making a snowman with his mother, the half elf mistress attempted to kill Zelos with a magical attack. Zelos' mother would be caught in the crossfire. His mother died in front of him and the last thing she ever said to him was she had wished he had never been born. Due to the mistress' crimes, his sister Seles would be locked away for life in the SE abbey. This shaped Zelos into not caring and feeling like he was worthless. He put on a mask of false confidence and bravado to compensate for his lack of self-worth. Zelos would be raised by Sebastian and he attended the research institute of Syback and he used his status as Chosen and looks to further himself and take shortcuts in school, although he himself is rather intelligent regardless. At some point years later, Zelos would be approached by one of Cruxis' generals and asked that in exchange having to fulfill his duties as Chosen, he would become a spy for Cruxis. Zelos would accept due to not really caring about his status and his emotional torment from all the years of neglect and self hatred.

Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World

Two years after the first series, Zelos makes his debut here by saving Emil and Marta from Richter in the rebuilt city of Palmacosta. Zelos later appears to help them again from Alice and Zelos tells her he will forget what she has done if she lives. He also is seen not liking Emil and Marta when they refer to Lloyd, who was framed for the destruction of Palmacosta years before the setting of new story, as a bastard. Zelos rejoins the group when his sister Seles is kidnapped. He is also the one to discover which of the two Lloyd's is the real one. He helps Emil and Marta finish their journey and defeat Richter from opening the gate to the monster world.

    Powers and Abilities

Zelos possesses one of the Chosen's Cruxis Crystals. This an advanced crystal from a typical exsphere. This crystal grants Zelos superhuman abilities and various other powers. Due to the crystal, Zelos has superhuman strength, speed, agility, reflexes, and durability. Zelos is capable of cutting through small boulders with ease and can send people flying several meters away with his strikes. He has blocked attacks from opponents who could cause massive craters in the ground, showing his stopping power and durability. He can strike hard enough to harm opponents that could survive falls that would kill someone. He can perform complicated acrobatics with ease. He can move so fast that in short bursts of speed that he looks like he can teleport, even by doing so by leaping in the air so fast a group of enemies attacking him from all directions couldn't register his movement until he was descending from the air. He is durable enough to withstand falls that would kill someone and take blows from opponents that could cause massive craters in the ground. Due to his Cruxis Crystal, he can transfer his own energy into his sword or dagger to shoot out energy blasts that can rip the ground to shreds, or channel the energy in the blade to enhance its cutting power. Also due to his Cruxis Crystal, he can grow golden angelic wings that enable him to fly and access light elemental energy for attacks.

Zelos is a human, but he would receive elven blood transfusions as an infant to ready him for the Cruxis Crystal. Because of this, Zelos can perform moderate level magic capabilities of fire, electric, wind, and earth elements. He can also perform moderately strong healing spells. And due to the angelic energy he can access from his Cruxis Crystal, Zelos can use the divine energy for his own personal and strongest attack known as Shining Bind.

Aside from his abilities granted from the crystal, Zelos is an expert combatant. He has casually defeated groups of enemies without the need for a weapon. Zelos' preferred weapon is a dagger or sword, making use of them in his fluid and almost dance-like fighting style. Zelos is incredibly intelligent and cunning. He managed to play the three groups of the Renegades, Lloyd's party, and Cruxis without them figuring it out until he revealed it. Zelos also has an uncanny observation ability. This seems to extend from his womanizing, but he transitioned it into a general ability. He has noticed Lloyd getting only a slight belly from sneaking sweets. When Richter tried killed Marta and attacking Emil, Zelos saved them and told Richter to try his luck with that battered body, something Emil nor Marta could pick up on. Zelos was also the only character to pick up on the difference between the real and fake Lloyd, which he did by noticing the imposter's scent from his cologne.

Due to his status as Chosen, Zelos is also held in high rank amongst society, having power and authority exceeded only by the King.
