I'm still on the fence about this one. While, Zatanna is a likeable character, a slim pull list makes one more selective about what they pick up.
Zatanna
Character » Zatanna appears in 1684 issues.
A good stage magician and daughter of magician Giovanni John Zatara, Zatanna, the Mistress of Magic, after her father vanished, kidnapped by an old foe she delved into his library and learned about her ancestors, Zatanna taught herself how to get access to her power by speaking her spells backwards, and became one of most powerful magic-users in the DC Universe.
Unscripted: Zatanna #1
I love Zatanna immensely; this issue notsomuch.
I swore Claremont wrote some of this as things were explained to lengths that would make Emma's hair in Astonishing jealous. Over explaining her character history while adding in new story made this issue feel extremely crammed, dangerously rushed, and over all, bad. My excitement for a Zatanna ongoing has since been crushed and my care level for issue 2 is in a basement somewhere.
Oh and the art, while sometimes amazing, there were moments where Z looked like a Loony Toon. How can you take someone seriously when they look like a foil to Elmer Fudd?
LMBO...Oh, Babs. So silly, I wonder what you would do with Zatanna's powers, fixing your hair just for the heck :P
I almost made this issue my pick of the week, but instead went with Brightest Day #2...I really did love this issue though.
I agree with Babs on most of her taste so I am hoping to love it as much as she does!
sorry G-man ;)
I liked the issue, but I have a love hate relationship with her spells. I love that you can know what she does by reading the spell backwards but it seems so lame.
I thought g-man was going to change to a 4 after all the things he said, seemed to me he enjoyed the issue a lot more than what he graded it for.
I agreed with G-man, the villains are not scary enough. When could DCU people smoke cigarettes again? I know the last Zatanna book was published under Vertigo and was a stinker, John Constantine was way out of Character. So with cig smoking and mild bondage, is this book really suppose to be Vertigo, but without the Vertigo banner to test sales?
I think the series needs John Constantine's and her romance to be explored! It can't happen in his book, so do it in hers
It's Doctor Light, not Polaris, at the beginning of the issue...
I really enjoyed this issue, even if it was a relatively understated #1. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
As for Zatanna's costume: it's a classic. And frankly, no more ridiculous than most superhero costumes.
I will be dropping Power Girl since Amanda and Paulmiotti are leaving maybe this would be a good replacement??
Me too! This issue was amazing. A real great way to start a series. The only thing I don't understand is if this happens after Blackest Night and Cry for Justice (when her throat was slashed by Prometheus) or if this is supposed to be "outside" any specific major plot." I love Zatanna, I love Dini and I loved this issue "
PS: I didn't know Zatanna was a vegeterian! She instantly moved up to my Top Ten list, right after Animal Man (who I like anyway, but being a veggie is +100 Comic Book Points in my book).
PS2: I suspected G-Man spoke Spanish. What about you, Babs?
I really enjoyed the book and thought it was the best book last week, but I have one major problem with this book.
It needs to establish a weakness for Zatanna and some limits on what she can and cannot do. Far too often, magic gets the "deus ex machina" treatment and it can get magicians out of anything. A book loses some drama if they can get out of everything such as Zatanna did when she popped down to the evil bar.
To solve G-man's problem about her stealth, Zee just says a spell and everything about her is silent ;)
ahh wish you guys had played more of that Cars song! I love it!
I was always wondering if I was pronouncing Zatanna correctly.
Sorry, G-Man. I'm with Babs on the pronunciation of Zatanna.
That cop character really is a rather cliche 1980's cop character. Leather jacket, cigarette, and personality issues.
I can't not believe Babs liked that "write a report" line. That is the most cliche and over used line in a cop story EVER.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I like the fishnets!
Man G-man...how can you have a problem with Zatanna's choice of shoes when Black Canary (whose costume also looks almost exactly the same) and Wonder Woman wears practically the same shoes? and as for the costume...STENHSIF ELUR!!!
I LOVED THIS ISSUE!!
from my blog:
This issue was really great! Paul Dini's writing was really good, i was really drawn into the story. The magical crime scene was really sick and the new characters, Brother Night and his gang are some cool additions to the DCU. Stephane Roux's art was also incredible. I was able to read the whole issue without looking at the words and i could not only tell what was going on, but i noticed all kinds of fun stuff in the background.
Definately pick this series up if you're interested. i read this 3 times and still enjoyed it.
5/5
Zatanna #1 was ok, and I like that Dini tried to give her a rogues gallery of her own, but I wasn't that impressed either. I agree with G-Man's 3.5. A decent book, but I won't beat down my LCS's door to buy issue #2.
LOL- you guys do the best reviews. You never fail to make me laugh with some "off" comment. I'm getting to the point of watching your reviews just to see what you'll say!
THANKS!
question- the only brightest day i'm reading is the main one and birds of prey, do i NEED to read all of the titles to get it or can i pick and choose?
Yes, The Oath was a fantastic mini-series, Babs, if you haven't read it, you MUST.
I gots to get to the comic book store. I've gotta come out of this comic book retirement I'm in. I'd love to get into this Zatanna series.
"WHAT A DOUCHE!"
lmao. this was alright for a first issue, i was expecting it to be a little all over the place trying to get the seeds sown and all but i love the henry fuseli nightmare reference, thats enough motivation to buy the second issue imo.
i really want this issue to test the series out because usually i get the graphic novels but i love wot ive read of zatanna so i'll make an exception
I loved the issue! I'm definitely going to pick up the next one. Weird, I usually am with G-man on his reviews. I guess there's a first time for everything!
I already really dislike the art. I LOVED Amanda's take on PG. I thought it was absolutely perfect... couldn't get any better. The new team swore up and down that they would stick to what Conner and Palmiotti had done with the book... that includes the art. And now what we've seen from promos is that for some inexplicable reason PG now has her dyke looking short hair again. Aside from that, obviously the no artist would ever be able to capture the style and look of Amanda's PG completely and perfectly but this shows they aren't even trying... and that lowers my faith in them staying true to the spirit of the book already." @ComiCCloseup: why will you drop it? why not see first how the new writers will do Power girl "

well it could just a variant covers that we are seeing just look at the variant cover for Power girl #1 :)
I loved this issue, but Zee is one of my favourite characters and I've been waiting years for her first ongoing.
