Tsukayama Yutaro is a young boy who wishes to become better at swords, he first appears in Rurouni Kenshin #35.

Yutaro lives with his father, Tsukayama Yuzaemon, a former samurai who became gained fame and riches through selling swords to Europeans. Yutaro feels that his father's actions both degraded and shamed him. Therefore Yutaro wants to become better than his father by honoring the ways of the Kendo of old.

His family was deceived by Isurugi Raijuta, who faked a robbery and then saved them so they would pay him to teach Yutaro the art of swordplay/Kendo. Yutaro becomes the rival of Myojin Yahiko as soon as they meet and the two gain a mutual desire to become better than one another.

After Raijuta initiates a failed sneak attack on Kenshin's group, Raijuta slices Yutaro's right arm so that the nerves are severed, thus making Yutaro unable to hold a sword with that hand.

To aid his son Yuzaemon takes Yutaro to Germany to get him medical treatment. Before he leaves, however, Yahiko confronts him and brings out his pride and inner swordsmanship again.

At the end of the series, Yutaro is identified as one of the instructors of the Kimya Kashin-ryu dojo, along with Yahiko. But he is not shown or mentioned by anyone, so nothing is known about what he has done since his last appearance.
