Don't play with alternate dimensions
Young makes me think of cool, younglings, fresh from the oven, without the harsh reality crust that envelops people (and characters or at least it should) as responsability and experience claim their toll. Young also rings a bell to the synonim of "new": ideas, concepts, characters, creative team, narrative structure, way of organizing a book and so on.Taking this two thoughts together, it's safe to say that Gillen's revamp of the Young Avengers sums up some of the fresh and new I mentioned before, especially if you consider the storyline, the narrative structure and that the characters are really young. Though I enjoyed the dialogues so much, it really reminded of Gillen's JIM, especially the ones between Noh-varr and Kate Bishop, unfortunately what started as a mind blowing issue, felt apart after the initial pages, proving that there isn't any really new or fresh about this book. Sure, the plot is mildly interesting, but I was really into the initial five pages, they were exceptional, then deliver all the atention to Hulkling and Wiccan (though I liked these characters in the initial volumes of Young Avengers), just to see another alternate dimension story, it felt a little boring to me, but new kids will definitely enjoy this book a lot. I feel I'm not being quite fair with Gillen and McKelvie, it was a pretty decent first issue, funny dialogues (even laughed about the J.R.R. Tolkien remark), but just not enough to capture my full atention. Also, I wasn't very happy with the lack of explanations regarding: 1) Loki's role with Wiccan's powers are yet to be explained; 2) Noh-Varr's relationship with Kate Bishop (did I miss something?); 3) Wiccan's intolerable and unforgivable desire to get into trouble, eve after all his past life experiences (he changed his mind quite easily right? From lecturing to sinning in a blink). If the plot didn't please me very much (I didn't like Wiccan's actions), McKelvie really delivered a spectacular issue, changed my whole concept about him as an artist and just for the first five pages showing Kate and Noh-Varr I think it was totally worth it buying this comic book.
