This book reads like the first fifteen minutes of a movie watches. It's mostly set up, one or two pages are spent on each female character we are going to meet somewhere down the road, all interstwined with a conversation between Yorrick ( the soon to be "Last Man" and his girl friend Beth, who at the point of this story is in the Australian out back. Ultimately this is a book that belongs to it's writer. Given the short time he spends with each character, he manages to bring to life intiguing and vivid characters. granted he goes a bit far with the pop culture references, almost turning Yorrick into a caricature. Still he is Juno when Juno wasn't even thought of yet. One thing of note, is how quickly the book read. It really is a breeze. I like that. Most of the best comics read like that.

As Englentine mentioned, yes, this issue reads just like a movie. Now, some of you may wonder why I gave my favorite series of all time 4.5/5 for the first issue. Easy, it's the first issue, it's mostly character set-up. Meet Yorick, his girlfriend, his sister, his mother, and a few other key players you meet down the road. There are certain elements you completely forget about set-up in this issue, like magic. Yorick is a magician, there is the set-up for a few possible magical items also. This is all stuff forgotten by issue #25, which is sad, but understandable. It's a quick read an a great introduction to the story and to the way the world of Vertigo works.
The writing is the highlight of the book, there is no doubt. Many people complain about the art work when it comes to most Vertigo books. The art does what it's supposed to do, tell a story, and Y:TLM has the best art of the whole company. Not only does it tell a story, but it has this classic pulp comic feel with a contemporary twist. The 50s/60s meets the new millenia. Give the book a try, I'm sure if you read the whole series, it will most certainly make your top 10, if not top 3 series of all time.
