D-Day
David and co. prepare to confront Roland Finch with the aid of the Pantheon.
The Good
By now you should all know that Frazer Irving's art on this book has been absolutely amazing. It's lush, beautiful, dark, and disturbing all at once. Nothing encapsulates this more than the panel of Julian gazing stoically in the mirror.
I'm a Judeo-Christian mythology buff so the origin of the Skull stronghold was very interesting to me.
It's no secret that Julian's not the least bit fond of Annie, but it was nice to see him sympathizing with her and comforting her. I guess the old dog's got a soft side after all.
There's a excellent moment where David discusses the use of magic and the occult with the Nuns and Catholic girl. Nun of the Above is especially against it's application. While she comes off a bit judgmental, you can see that she's sincerely concerned for Julian.
This issue focuses heavily on David and his struggle to release his old life and embrace this new world he's found himself thrown into. David talks to both Morgan and Annie about his concerns and desire to maintain his normal life. It's amazing to me how Rozum can write such thought provoking conversation and character moments in so few pages.
Pterodactyl battle mounts? Jet pack wearing Golems? A Ninja/mummy/zombie assassin sisterhood? Man do I ever love this title!
Before the invasion begins Julian and David share a really great moment. I love the way Rozum's writing makes these characters feel so real and like they've shared years of history with one another without making feel like I've been missing those years. It never ceases to amaze me how I've never read a single issue of the original run of this title but feel like I've known these characters for years.
The Bad
This issues very dialog heavy and those wanting some action will be disappointed.
The Verdict
Buy This Comic!!!
I don't think it would be a stretch to say that ever since it's relaunch Xombi has not only been the best DC comic published but one of the finest comics on the market period. Rozum's writing and Irving's art are a match made in some hellish heaven. As this series moves to an all too soon ending I must say It's been nothing less than a pleasure to read. I can't wait to see how Rozum and Irving bring things to an end. I can only hope that we fans can once again write/email/threaten DC into giving this book another chance in the near future.
