Brief Summary
A Day Like Any Other
Kitty Pryde is training in the Danger Room on a set of bars. She is suffering a small amount of depression and there are no X-Men within the mansion so she is training to blow off some steam. Unfortunately she misses a bar and falls to the ground, her friend Illyana Rasputin is there to help her but she isn’t injured.
Illyana is a little intimated with the size of the mansion and she accepts a tour from Kitty. First Kitty phases her way up to the Danger Room controls and shows Illyana that the room can change in an instant as she makes it look like they’re on a far away planet.
After they are finished Kitty explains a little more about the mansion and they go up an elevator and arrive on the ground floor. There they see Professor Xavier’s study and she explains a little more about the device Cerebro.
Next the pair move up to Storm’s attic where they both marvel over the plants that the X-Man has been growing. They also see Storm’s personal effects from her trip across Africa. They also travel to the rooms of Jean Grey and Cyclops.
The next room they visit is Wolverine’s and they are surprised with how elegant it looks as it has a Japanese style to it. The next room they visit is Nightcrawler’s which houses a lot of memorabilia of swashbuckling films. They then visit Colossus’s room which has several paintings that he has done himself.
The next room the two girls visit is the dorm that they share and they both change into their bathing suits and make their way down to the mansion’s lake house. Along the way they go past the swimming pool and the girls don’t realise that they are being watched.
Eventually they make it to the lake house and Kitty is a little saddened about the divorce of her parents but they then dive into the water with their scuba diving gear and swim through an underwater entrance to the hangar. There they see the X-Jet and Kitty explains a few of its capabilities to Illyana. They then dry themselves off and get changed into a spare suit. Kitty then goes to the controls of the computer inside the hangar and pulls up three dimensional images of the mansion and its location on the map.
Suddenly there is an intruder alert and Kitty phases through the ground to make headway. Illyana is forced to go through a door and they meet up at the cable car. They then quickly make their way back to the mansion as Kitty explains her battle with the N’Gari on Christmas Eve. She realises that Illyana has missed half of her childhood thanks to being trapped in Limbo.
When they reach mansion Kitty creeps up to a door to listen to what’s on the other side. Illyana pushes her through and Kitty is surprised to see the X-Men, Starjammers, Stevie Hunter and the New Mutants throwing her a surprise birthday party.
Kitty is overjoyed by this and blows out the candles of the cake. She then thanks everyone for their efforts and everyone has a nice time. She realises that Illyana had been keeping her distracted while the others got the party ready and the two friends hug one another.
My Thoughts
Now we get to one of the X-Men one shots that I believe was recently reprinted in a recent re-release of Marvel Masterworks X-Men. Anyway the main gist of this issue is that it reprinted Giant Size X-Men #1 which famously introduced the New X-Men and completely changed the face of the comic book industry. For this blog post I am only focusing on the second story since I have already reviewed Giant Size X-Men #1 and it is pointless (And very time consuming to do it again).
The story mainly focuses on the growing friendship between Kitty Pryde and Illyana Rasputin and it is a friendship that stays strong in the comics, even to this day. The story also gives us an insight of the X-Mansion and the exact layout and functions of the different facilities. It was interesting to see the X-Men’s rooms and how other rooms in the mansion had their purposes.
The story is written by regular scribe Chris Claremont and is drawn by veteran X-Men artist Dave Cockrum and new artist Hilary Barta who to my knowledge has never drawn an X-Men comic before this issue. It was a good thing to have Cockrum on board for this story since he did draw Giant Size X-Men #1 which is the first story printed in this issue so there is a sense of consistency.
The story seems to take place between Uncanny X-Men #167 and #168 since it is after the X-Men have returned to Earth after their dealings with the Brood and meeting the New Mutants. It seemingly takes place before Kitty discovered that Lockheed followed her back to Earth although there is a very realistic looking model of him in her room. Either way this story takes place a little after where the X-Men series is right now.
The reason for the X-Men throwing Kitty a birthday party is that she missed her last birthday while the team were in space and fighting for their lives. It is nice to see that despite the fact that the X-Men are a super powered team dealing with fantastic situations almost every day of the week that they can actually do things that are considered to be normal. It just makes the series a little more realistic.
I did like Illyana’s role in this comic as she seems to be a little naive about the mansion (I think mainly to keep Kitty distracted). But there are hints to events that took place in Limbo that we will see eventually. Her friendship with Kitty seems to be growing and is definitely a high point of the series.
I was surprised to see that Nightcrawler was keeping a small pterosaur in his room. I don’t think it was ever picked up before or since but I think it would have been fun to see him letting it out of its cage and allowing it to fly around the room. But I guess we had Lockheed to do this so the tiny pterosaur was more or less forgotten.
In conclusion I’m giving this story a 7 out of 10. I would score it higher but since it is really only an explanation story that is as high as I’ll score it.
