Can someone catch me up on the major events in X-Men history? I'm reading Uncanny X-Force (issue #2) and find myself a little lost. I plan to read Schism and Wolverine and the X-Men and also Uncanny X-Men. I just want to know the major events so I can read these 3 titles and enjoy them.

How much history do you need, are we just talking resent history or all the way back to the 60s

One day there was a man named Charles Xavier who had a friend named Erik. They were friends in college and both closeted mutants until someone got pissypants at the other and they decided they werent going to be bros anymore. Charles decided to be good and start finding young mutants like himself to train where Erik decided to go crazy evil and get some help from his mutant kids. (this part is fuzzy) Things are totally dandy until one day Charles's team gets lost/kidnapped/something that happened in the 70s, so he has to make a second team to go rescue the first. After this the xmen got hella big and Charles was happy. From this core team, spawned about 20 other teams and 2 other generations of mutants and now charles has taken a backseat because cyclops one of his originals told him to "eff off" and decided to drive for a bit. Not liking how he drives and always being crazy jealous of his woman, Wolverine furthered the split and told Cyclops to have fun by himself as he took half of the remaining mutants and started his own party.

It ain't canon. But it's where X-Man was plucked out from. And current Nightcrawler. Other than that you can skip it.
