It would help define her more because her specific power--unlocking powers of mutants who failed to become mutants and then copying their powers--was so intrinsically tied to her messiah story. She needs something a little more "common utility" to find a new niche.
New powers are not always the answer, but in some cases, it can help redefine a character. I'd hold up Archangel as one success story.
Randomly changing the power of a character that does not have an ill-defined power would only help to further convolute this character. What would really help would be to come up with a real origin story, not doing something as superficial as changing a power, all powers are not meant be "common utilities" and when they do become that way we are usually forced to deal with a story that shows the character is more than just their powers by removing said power.
They are all power mimics. You gotta bottom-line these things. The nuances are meaningless, and "mimicry" is a weak defining trait. It's especially hard to sell more than one of those.
The bottom line is that there powers are not similar enough to be an issue unless you are the type of reader that can't see past powers when viewing a character and only sees them very superficially. The bottom line is, Rogue is not a mimic her power is far too parasitic in nature to be considered as such and in fact the copying of others powers is not her power but a side effect of her actual power to absorb life force related energies. The X-men have "sold" having a bunch of very popular telepaths all at once by using "nuances" to define how each of them uses the same power, with no trouble in the past and have added more telepaths that are all very popular as well, due to not only using different applications of the same power, but by not being defined solely on having that power. To think that changing a characters power or getting rid of powers that may seem similar on a very superficial and myopic level makes the fact these characters outside of having drastically different powers and levels are only defined by said powers and are not really characters in the eyes of people that think this will solve anything in the long run. No amount of new powers would make a character like Hope more interesting considering the nature of her power allows her to have any new power she wants just by being around others.
