Well it is an easy way to create tension and drama for a character when they can't think of another way.

Seriously...okay not quite, but this is pretty much true and Marvel wide not just the X-Men. The best or worst example I can think of is in Robert Kirkman's Marvel Team-Up 2004-2006., in the League Of Losers arc (huge recommend anyone read the whole volume)....

Arana is murdered and dismembered to the point that all that's left is one of her arms, which Terror Inc. gladly uses as his own new arm and keeps thereafter, and in the foreward of the next issue " Arana's arm " is actually listed as an official member of the team roster and books star roll call, with a picture of the amputated body part proudly displayed above the name.

Sometime ago, and I'm sorry I can't remember who a user here was toying with the idea of compiling an amputee comic character list in light of John Walker having just been inducted into the club (I didn't even try for that pun, sorry).

It does not bother me, I think that it would not be to far as to say that there are a lot of serious injuries that would happen in their line of work, to include the chance one of them could lose a limb.

Karma's leg amputation was just unnecessary to be honest.

Agreed on Karma and Hellions amputations being unnecessary. There was no followup after other than hellion is pissed and karma is taking time off. And while we are on this topic, I really hate how karma constantly gets crapped on because no one knows how to write her. She got some time in the start of New Mutants then got written into the background.

In the original new mutants shes only around for a short while, then gets kidnapped and returns later fat and as a villain. In Volume 2, she has some story at the start then loses her leg and decides to stay in the background. Why does no one show her trying to do more with her powers? Surely she could have a place at one of the schools as a teacher.

Yes if were going to make it hard on them being mutants with ultra mega powers we should give them some reason to be all sad. As an amputee I have to say there is a large feeling of loss at first but you do get over it. I lost my right leg and guess what, I rarley ever think of it. I have a prosthetic, I can't get a robot one because I don't need it. My question is why is it always arms. NO spoilers but all she needs is abit of crazy glue.

It's not just the X-Men it's Marvel character in general.Slingshot got her arms cut off my Gorgon in Secret Warriors,Constrictor lost his arms,U.S. Agent recently lost a leg,Misty Knight lost arm as an officer,Bucky lost his arm in World War II,The Klaw only has one arm,Grim Reaper only has one arm,I think every character that has used the name Razorfist is missing both hands,Without her powers; Komodo doesn't have either of her legs.

In the Marvel mutants are another minority, so by mutilating one of them not only is that character a mutant but a handicapped person, or a differently-abled mutant. As I call it the poor crippled mutant stick.

    - The writers want to ingrain into your mind that the X-Men are at war and like too many of our returning soldiers IRL are suffering permanent injuries and remind us of the costs paid

    - Sadly we do not have the level of technology that that do in the Marvel U and cannot provide anywhere close to the level of prosthesis necessary

    - What I do not understand is how clunky and unnatural looking the replacement units are, the technology to make one that is almost (or is) the real thing I would expect to be available based on the minds they have in the X-Club and of those they consider as allies

Karma: Atleast something is going on with her.

    Hellion: Supported his jerkish behaviour.

Yes, during Morrisons run. Jean fused her molecules back together. Guess we will see her only in diamond form until shes got it back. ;)
