My 10:
1. Cyclops - He has lead the X-Men for a crazy amount of time (and still leading them now), sacrificed his teen and young adulthood just to keep the dream alive. Fought for the dream, even after he got married (and well, left his wife), he and the original 5 X-Men started X-Factor, continuing Xavier's dream.
2. Wolverine (tied with Storm) - He has fought for the dream through thick and thin. Hell, he's been in the Uncanny X-Men title more than Cyclops. He has always been the person who takes care of the X-Men's problems permanently (X-Force, anyone?). Also for a killer, he's quite honourable, killing Jean Grey, Mariko for the greater good, starting up a school for kids to be kids.
2. Storm - She has always been the symbol of female pride along the X-Men. Fought for the X-Men since Giant Size X-Men. She has been the Field Leader or the Second leader of the X-Men right after Cyclops. Another person who has been in the Uncanny X-Men title more than Cyclops.
4. Professor X - He is the man with the dream of peaceful co-existence between humans and mutants. He is the one man who formed the X-Men. Why he isn't on the top is because of his massive absence in the many years, being in space, dead etc.
5. Jean Grey - Even though she's been dead for, well, a long time, she has always had her impact on the X-Men. Being the first female mutant to join the X-Men, she hasn't always had it easy, especially with a Phoenix Force constantly trying to possess you. The Dark Phoenix Saga has always been a benchmark for classic American comic book stories, and after its first publication, it pretty much wrote future stories by itself.
6. Iceman - He has always been the guy who people never thought would get anywhere. Well, people were wrong. If you think about it, Iceman has always been fighting for the dream, but writers has always shelved him, making an appearances every other issue but having no real character development. But the point is, he has always been there, even since the original 5 X-Men were formed.
7. Colossus - Cured the Legacy Virus, been the sworn guardian of the X-Men as far as history serves (exclude the part he joins the Acolytes, but he DID redeem himself). He has even broken his "No Killing" rule just to save the X-Men. Death couldn't even hold him, and is currently fighting for the survival of mutantkind on Cyclops' side.
8. Kitty Pryde - Mascot is the wrong word to use here. She has always been a fan favourite since her first appearance, then she got injured in Mutant Massacre and was shipped off to join Excalibur. There, her contributions went unnoticed. Soon after, she returned to the X-Men and became a key member to the Astonishing X-Men title. She was also Wolverine's first teenage sidekick, so take that Jubilee and X23!
9. Rogue - Schizophrenia at its finest. She has come a long way since her troubled self in the 80s. Fighting for the dream without having even the slightest doubts.
10. Magneto - Never has there been a character who's background history ever been so poignant. Magneto has always been the tragic hero, with the loss of this wife, child, trying to constantly fight for his dream of mutant superiority. The only reason why he's so low on the list is because:
a) His contributions were relatively small compared to his evil deeds.
b) He has hindered the X-Men more than helped them. but hey! He's changed now, I hope.
But wait! There are so many more:
Gambit, Cable, Bishop (before he went bat-crazy), Psylocke, Beast, Archangel, Jubilee, Cannonball, Moonstar, Forge, Rachel Sumemrs, Havok, Polaris, Multiple Man, Strong Guy, Wolfsbane, Nightcrawler, Chamber, Husk, X23. Warpath, Pixie, Magik, Sunspot, Magma, Rictor, Lockheed (not really an X-Men), Emma Frost, Siryn, Banshee, Quicksilver, Domino, M, Namor and Hope (currently important, but not historically), Karma.
They all have had an impact in the X-Universe, some great, some small, but either way, important.
