You might want to read two big story arcs for the X-men before you read Avengers Vs X-men. The two big story arcs are Second Coming and House of M. You can probably get both of these in trade

To get a real good clear message about the event... I would start at House of M, then proceed to Messiah Complex, then Second Coming, and maybe some Hope Summers focused issues and story arcs, THEN I would read AvX!! That's just my opinion!!

I think that much back-reading is overkill and intimidating, and scares potential new readers away.  I'm "new again" to X-Men and frankly have not actually read the storylines that papad1992's suggesting.  I've familiarized myself with them as much as I can on wikis etc and got the barebones facts from that and feel that I know well enough what's going on.  If you have the time/energy/cash to look into multiple story arcs, great!  If not, do the best you can with the information available to you.

Reading what someone has posted on a wiki page isn't the same thing as reading it first hand! I've only suggested three major story-arcs that pretty much make up the backbone to the whole AvX event! U can buy these story-arcs hardcover but it's pretty expensive! So my advice is to read what you can about these storylines then I'd buy them one at a time to familiarize yourself with the material and such and wait to buy AvX!!

It's important that you know Cyclops is way out of character, don't let this issue define him for you
