I would not have Storm ally the X-Men with the HFC following the Mutant Massacre and then fake the X-Men's death, leaving Magneto to interface with them back in the 1980's. Magneto's relationship with the HFC destroyed the fragile trust he had built with the New Mutants, which was in part to blame for their actions leading to Doug Ramesy's death and eventually made them leave the school. The X-Men faking their death accomplished nothing and eventually resulted in the X-Men being scattered all over the globe, Psylocke falling to the machinations of the Spiral and the Hand, Storm being reduced to childhood and running into Gambit in New Orleans, the Shadow King gaining power and influence, the original team of X-Men who were operating as X-Factor at the time would not have completely served contact with the existing team of X-Men and so they would have been prepared to deal with the threat from Cameron Hodge and Genosha. It is also possible that Magneto would not have returned to violence, as he would not have felt the entire fate of mutant kind had fallen on his shoulders with no one to turn to as some of his worst nightmares came true (Mutant Massacre, Mutant Registration Act, Doug Ramsey death at the hands of a human).
The entire X-Verse would be changed.
