Humans Hunt Mutants... But not Vampires?

Posted by DATNIGGA (1185 posts) - - Show Bio

Ive always had a hard time understanding this i mean

most mutants look just like humans aside from have a x gene & powers & there hunted for being monsters... mean while you have

ACTUAL monsters running around the marvel verse that have existed for centuries but hardly anyone pays attention

Look at all the people who have tried to stop the growth of mutant kind

The Purifiers : who feel mutants are children of the devil... but dont hunt vampires who basically are devils lol

Bastion/operation zero tolerance: Feels mutants are a threat to the growth of humanity so they hunt them... but vampires prey on humans & have been known to kill them for food lol

friends of humanity , trask , the governments with sentential's ect how can they ignore a threat so great?

Now one could say... most of humanity doesn't know very much about the existence of vamps... well during the curse of the mutant storyline there were many vampire attacks on humanity. police were finding bit marks on dead humans ect & this has happened many other times as well. the governments understand mutant & superhuman affairs so its not a stretch to believe that SHEILD or another government branch would know about the existence of vampires & take the threat serious. plus in a world were you have people who can read your mind , summon lightning cause large scale earth quakes bend reality & control time the idea of a vampire shouldn't be to far fetched

You could also say... that these various groups dont wanna get involved with these supernatural monsters because there too strong. that wouldn't make to much sense cause mutant terrorist groups like The Brotherhood or The marauders are severely dangerous with diverse & formidable powers. vamps are strong but have many weaknesses the easiest why to deal with one is to simply cut there head off

X-Men #2

a feat even a human could pull off.

why does the world focus all there attention on mutants? most of which are friendly & human like but ignore the threat that lurks & has been lurking in the shadows?

Vampires

My understanding is humans don't actually think the vampires and werewolves and that stuff exist.

Agreed. It's the same way parts of our society vilify homosexuals and people "not right in the head" but completely ignore the Smurf epidemic. And if the authorities knew of vampire attacks, wouldn't they keep it under wraps so as to avoid a panic?

True most humans dont know about the existence of the vampires so they dont openly persecute them like they do mutants but the various governments do there have been many vampire related attacks in the marvel universe plus there is the existence of blade which is living breathing hunting proof that vampires are around. (also doom has a few that guard his castle). so the various governments should know about them & if many of the governments are quick to attack innocent mutants with Sententials why not attack the vamps? civilian's may not know of vampires but they can use convert operations to wage war.

See all those people? getting milked for there blood? its a bit hard to believe the government just let that go but attacks there average mutant for being different lol

Think the main difference is that vampires either tend to live among the general populace hidden in plain sight so to speak, or just live hidden from view altogether, but mutants live very visibly and with a high profile (if your an X-Man) within the human populace - very easy to find. Vamps tend to be very stealthy and hard to find - the attack on Utopia being the obvious exception to that. Plus lots of people thinking vamps just a myth whereas they know mutants exist as they see them on a regular basis, therefore this is something tangible to fear. When it comes to governments and vamps, yeah they probably do know about them but, given the public's disbelief and fear of mutants, are happy to largely ignore the situation. Governments probably see more political/personal gains to be made by sympathizing with and playing on peoples fear about mutants (as seen in Schism) than trying to convince people vamps exist and hunt them down (or even just do things covertly and risk a political incident - "Yeah, our troop were on foreign soil cos we were hunting vampires. They're real, honest!")

Its because Mutants are newcomers, vamps ect. have been around for a long time.

#10 Posted by DATNIGGA (1185 posts) - - Show Bio

@irascendedlolkitten: not really Apocolips has been living since before Dracula became a vampire Selene was around for centuries there are other mutants that have been around for a really long time

mutants don't tend to fight back (i know i know, not counting the Brotherhood and the extremist mutants) so the people think they can bully them safely, however f%@k with a vampire and it will eat you. it's like in the real world back during the 60s, people had no problem attacking black people, but i doubt they'd go after people who caused real problems...like gangsters or criminals

thats a good point altho as often as marvel keeps showing dracula & the forgiven a war might be right around the corner

I think it would be easier to kill vampires than mutants, especially in the Marvel Universe anyways. Mutants tend not to die and if they do they come back! Vampires die, except Dracula but he's possibly a mutant. So the Purifiers and the like should pick on the bloodsuckers for practice because they usually suck badly against mutants only killing some no-name, low level, just created mutant for that issue. If they really hated mutants one would take a hit for the team, get injected with mutant genome hormone stuff, tinfoil coating his brain and walk into Xavier's with 200 pounds of Semtex & nails strapped to their body!

I blame Twighlight every time someone tries to hunt vampires there mauled by a hord of prepubecent girls. why do you think Blade works at night so much? it's past the girls bed times

#15 Posted by VAMPCATEXE (24 posts) - - Show Bio

Aside from fact being that most mutants are running around in broad daylight and making themselves known, as well the mutant hate being a reflection of real intolerant whereas people hate whom they fear and who they fear is anyone different due to the fact that they're a breath from being that person, is the fact that most vampires in the Marvel Universe showed up as antagonists whom were and still are hunted, Dracula being the most well know but not only one.

See: Blade, Anita Blake, Ulysses Bloodstone, Elsa Bloodstone, Jonas Cray, John Harker, Abraham Van Helsing, MI-13, The Dracula Hunters, The Midnight Sons, The Nightstalkers, The Darkhold Redeemers, Bible John, Apocalypse, Clan Akkaba, Dr.Doom, Spider-man, The Witches, The Avengers, and in fact the X-Men themselves represent just a small amount of persons and teams of persons who have hunted and killed vampires and do so today.

Dracula's enemies list on his bio gives a pretty good haul of named characters that are against vampires, as does Lilith's, whom many of the more concrete vampire hunters were established fighting her in the Spirits Of Vengeance arc.

But if I'm not mistaken mutants haven't appeared in such numbers until recently though right?  The funny thing is that people are pretty awesome at ignoring/ not seeing what they don't want to see.   Experiments have shown that a lot of people can miss something as obvious as some one in a pink guerilla suit.  Besides gaps in our attention and other problems of our perception, the actual world is still full of weird things that go unexplained by science and ignored.

I find it hard to believe that the average person in the Marvel universe wouldn't consider the possibility of anything, they live in a world were some children can juggle buses, people flying is common place, gods walk the streets, and a random gene can give people the ability to blow up a planet or create a whole damn universe, doubting vampires with all that crap going on would be beyond naive it's just plain stupid

@joshmightbe: thats exactly what im saying lol its not out of the realm of possibility when impossible things happen everyday

Honestly? I still feel you are approaching this the... there are other ways to approach this, and you can look at real life to help. Humans hunt humans in real life as well you know, and do all sorts of bad things to each other that makes them look hypocritical. Why does a white racist living in Australia find a white person living in Sweden acceptable as a human, yet a Polynesian (brown skin) a heathen or sub human? Chances are the Australian guy won't be fluent in Swedish, and as lets say the Polynesian speaks English, fluently right there the Australian and the Polynesian share something in common. Then again... maybe the Australian might hate Swedish people as well? Who might he hate more? Well, maybe the Polynesian guy because he is closer in physical proximity? Maybe the Swedish guy because he is harder to identify as the right kind of white. Racism is less about the color of the skin, and more about the ignorance of the racist. So in Marvel this is analogous to mutants and vampires and peoples perceptions about them being different.

Lots of mutants don't look like mutants... they look like humans. A racist could justify therefore that we should fear them more? They are a greater threat? Hard for a vampire to go to school in broad daylight... unless you know, *insert Twilight reference* but mutants? So the ways people justify their racial hatred is generally pretty messed up and complicated. Fill of hypocrisy. Not just about ignorance, but different types of ignorance. Maybe they don't realize vampires exist, maybe they think that vampires are actually mutants and by killing all mutants you kill or monsters including vampires? Maybe they think mutants are evolved vampires, maybe they are paranoid that their neighbor is a mutant and they don't know? I have mixed blood, and every now and then, in certain situations I feel people sort of looking at me before they ask what am I? In reference to my race/ethnicity? Am I just a tan european or just really pale brown person, middle eastern, native american, and all sorts of *shrugs*

Not only that in Marvel, mutants actually want their voice to be heard, and loudly. For good reasons? Some don't want to be heard either, some get shoved into the spotlight? With vampires? Neither of those things are as strictly true. Its sort of like real life again. Lots of indie comics are really good (vampires) but they get ignored more because they get ignored more, its a type of cycle, where as many big name books get talked about way more, because they get talked about way more. So mutants might just be like this niche fascination the 616 humans are fascinated with how we are with celebrities, some sports stars, etc etc analogy has broad application.

Interesting/great thread.

I believe the Death of Dracula one-shot  touched on the extreme secrecy of the Marvel Vampires. In this issue, as all the different sects are sitting around a table, numerous sect leaders explore the encroachment of humans into their otherwise secretive, isolated domains. Humans are thus found dumping waste into the waters held by the Atlanteans, and urban expansion threatens the Anchorites' secluded rural estates . It would seem then Vampires in the Marvel Universe have a certain penchant for hiding - excepting the events of Curse of the Mutants, of course. Maybe there's a reason for this secrecy then? Maybe they were once hunted en masse, perhaps during the middle ages or time of the inquisition/ witch-hunts? Perhaps vampires simply learnt centuries ago that the shadows were their sole domain of influence, whereas mutants seek some form of acceptance, to walk freely and unmolested among humanity - hence the tension, bigotry and persecution.

I feel as though it is something that does not lend itself to long lasting stories, not of course this is likely due to no one trying, outside of blade and such, plus if normal human got into the vampire hunting game then the capes would get involved to pull their buts out of the fire. The weaknesses of vamps make this an issue however. In about 5 minutes Reed Richards or Iron man could make a solar light inducer or somesuch that would instantly kill vamps Human torch would have a field day with the undead vulnerability to fire. Scarlet Witch could turn night into day they are too easy to kill and up to now have not made many big crossover plots to change the world.

Another answer could be that the editors in Marvel want vamps to stay to their own books. Let us say you like hulk and you also read Xmen Is there something wrong with the xmen because of the lack of hulk appearance or should you just read hulk books.

I think humans probably are to lazy to even wonder vampires exist. Also, vampires have to be super secret about living, sinces humans now know all their weaknesses. I think werewolves should just kill them all

#25 Posted by DATNIGGA (1185 posts) - - Show Bio

@Nightwing12: True.. come to think of it I dont think ive ever seen a huge empire of werewolves tho. Mutants have a kingdom & Vampires do too i guess Werewolves just have packs

The Xmen is one of those great ideas that when you stop & look back at it you find that one little thing thats just so essential to its backstory & origin, yet is just dumb & doesnt work, but you hope its sheer awesomeness hides it, or makes up for it.

Humans in marvel love the Avengers, but hate spiderman & mutants. Wolverine would be the face of the Avengers, but when they learn he is a mutant, they'd turn on him & boycott until he is fired.

Dumb, but then gain, that might actually be the whole point.

But I do feel the Xmen with their premise of "racial" discrimination would be better off as its own seperate universe.

Because most of the ordinary humans in the marvel universe are morons.

I disagree with this if only for the fact that people's hatred and fear of mutants is completely and utterly understandable. If anything I find it a little bizarre that people in the Marvel U aren't more afraid of groups like The Avengers or many other heroes for that matter. And yet even if it is strange it's also sort of understandable. Think of the concept behind Civil War more so than its execution and that pretty much explains a lot of it. Many super teams have government support or at the very least they have forces that they answer to within a given command structure. People can accept this, the government is in charge (even if that's not the truth people can still believe it), however with mutants this isn't the case. A lot of heroes have easily documented origins, you know who they are or at least you wouldn't have a very hard time doing so with a devoted investigation team, but mutants can be anyone and they can be staggeringly dangerous even without trying to be dangerous.

I'd point at the first X-Men film.

Robert Kelly was being a jerk, but was he really wrong about the handgun comment? Some mutants really do have 100x the destructive force of the average handgun and these are people you have no way of identifying. What happens if you cut that guy off in traffic? Or say you're having an affair with his girlfriend?

It's a lot easier to find mutants than vampires! Everybody KNOWS that the former exist but most people consider vampires to be a myth( Anne Rice novels and "Twilight"novels/films notwithstanding!).
