Greg Land draws the X-men... So... Sexy

#1 Posted by poisonfleur (2116 posts) - 9 months, 26 days ago - Show Bio

Sure he may trace his drawings, but you have to admit. Greg Land can capture some of the X-men in the sexiest ways you have ever seen them. The X-men have never looked hotter. (Granted sometimes his characters look the same with a different color swaps, but that can be said about other artists as well.)

Agree? Disagree? Too much sex appeal to do justice? Maybe other artists bring the x-men better than he does?

I dislike her portrayal of emma. She's always smiling like a porn-star. That's out of character.

I no like, Land. There's little variety in his characters.

#4 Posted by Blood1991 (8098 posts) - 9 months, 26 days ago - Show Bio

Land is very hit and miss with me. I like his covers alot, but some of his interior art comes off as generic "especially female faces".

#5 Posted by SC (9855 posts) - 9 months, 26 days ago - Show Bio

Sexy is subjective, I only really find the top left depiction of Storm as being anything that could be considered sexy, and its more to do with the fact its a reference of a woman posing from an interesting angle, the image has good coloring, giving the image depth, and the angle is as such that any consistency or lack of would be apparent. The problem I have with Land's art is his characters look like cos-players at best, and at worst cardboard/plastic cutouts. No movement at all with his panel layouts. I actually do think his art is quite nice when dealing with hyper decompressed stories. Endsong for example I liked and thought was well done artistically.

IMO, he's a no talent hack that shouldn't be allowed to work in the industry. His "art" looks nice at first, but after a while, EVERYTHING he draws look the same. The faces, the poses, and the background. He has a habit of drawing really big closeup shots, and there barely has any background. His women look very plastic and generic. I don't find them to be attractive at all. I really dislike the inconsistency in his drawing. One character sometimes has 10 different looks with just one expression (The stupid grin).

They look "sexy" because he traces pornstars.

Worst artist currently working after Rob Liefeld.

To be honest I'm 50/50 with Land, he's certainly not the worst but sometimes he's drawings don't fit. Like the cover to one of those Uncanny X-men comics where in Tabula Rasa "The Immortal" was standing over the X-men lying in the ground defeated I can't remember exactly who (Psylocke or Storm) but the face was not that of defeat but that of enjoyment.

Awwwh-- I actually thought Emma, Storm and Jean where 3 of the ladies he does well. I kinda figured if Emma sarcastically smiled, she might look like that. But you are so right-- He does draw some the x-men like porn-stars. Conversational as this may sound, but I don't mind that at all. B)

Agreed, sometimes I can't tell his Magik, Emma, and Dazzler apart without looking at the costumes. But Storm and Jean look stunning. :)

@Katie24: LMAO at the Stupid Grin!! XD

I know exactly what you are talking about, I actually like the 'stupid grin' face in some scenes. But you are right it can be overused sometimes.

Oh Pixie.......................Your face makes me giggle

#19 Posted by poisonfleur (2116 posts) - 9 months, 26 days ago - Show Bio

@White Mage: LOL, White Mage!! Hush now-- LOL Now you are making me have second thoughts about this picture of Pixie. (It's a cute cover even tho this doesn't look like Pixie's face. To be fair A LOT of artist depict Pixie differently ) Not going to lie tho-- I remember when this comic was in shops, I bought it because the cover drew me in.

@danhimself: He did do Birds of Prey-- Didn't he!? Nice. I totally forgot about that.

@SC: Endsong might have been his best work. Although-- that is the book where I didn't like the way he did Emma. I feel later he started drawing her a bit differently.

Also some of his uncanny x-men cover work catches my attention a lot of the time when I go to the comic shop.

Sometimes he can hit the right note, other times it's a train-wreck of porn tracings.

#22 Posted by MyraMyraMyra (290 posts) - 9 months, 26 days ago - Show Bio

Tracing makes them all look the same. Emma, Jean, Psylocke, Kitty, Storm and Pixie all have the same face, the same body type, and the same hairstyle. Even their empty grins and standard porn star poses look identical. They look like clones of each other who just happen to have different hair and skin colours. If these pictures were black and white and you could only see their faces, you couldn't even tell which is which.

I don't find any of these pictures - or Land's "art" in general - sexy because all of his women look hollow, plastic, lifeless, and devoid of any traces of individual personality. In my opinion, they look as hot as blow-up dolls - they might have ideal body proportions (for porn stars), but the total absence of character just makes them look creepy as hell.

#23 Posted by _Zombie_ (9599 posts) - 9 months, 26 days ago - Show Bio

There's a mistake in your thread title. Specifically where it says that Greg Land draws.

#24 Edited by Veitha (1644 posts) - 9 months, 26 days ago - Show Bio

Every time I read a Land's comic I see a blonde porn star that can turn herself into diamond... I think she's called Emma Frost

#25 Posted by JohnnyGat (1011 posts) - 9 months, 26 days ago - Show Bio

So yeah, this pretty much shows how Land's art is out of place at times. Makes it look as if Psylocke is loving that grass.

I strongly disagree.

I am not a fan of his work. They all look like wooden statues to me, and I hate how he re-uses poses. Personally, there is absolutely no sex appeal in his images because they are too stiff. Worse yet, the female superheroes never look athletic and his composition tends to be off as a result of all of these factors.

@poisonfleur said:

This is one of those pictures that make me dislike his style. This could work contextually if this were Emma and the Stepford Cuckoos. But it's not. It's Emma, Karma and Dazzler (*corrected in later edit). Since it's three different characters who are very different personality-wise, the image comes off as lazy.

Worst part: I can't even call him a hack, because hacks tend to copy poses, not just get magazines and trace the work. In manga, a few manga artists got in big trouble with their fans for tracing other artists' images when their styles are similar, and Land isn't even in this company because he traces real photographs.

His work on Endsong and Uncanny's Tabula Rasa was good, but everything outside of that ? Downright horrible.

So facking glad he's off the X-Books to infinite and beyond.

What an atrocity.

Facking horrible, mate.

And his women aren't even that sexy (except for his Storm, truthfully speaking, she's almost always on point), most of them look like they just escaped some Anorexia Nervosa *cough cough!* She-Hulk *cough cough!*.

HAHHAAAA!! This is actually True!

(Why did you have to go there Hareil!!) lol I totally forgot about that!

@PhoenixoftheTides: Actually I think that's Dazzler standing behind Emma and Karma.

.....lol...

(There is a valid point here on how everyone looks the same.)

I think picture looks strong. And a lot of his panels I could see someone hanging up as a picture or poster. I guess his pictures stand consistently stand out whether they are good or bad-- and always seem to have a sexual energy about them.

@JohnnyGat: Maybe Storm and Psylocke got knocked out-- and hit the floor sexually... and Psylocke is secretly into S&M and she liked it. lol jk. But I get what you mean here. This reminds me of the heroes for hire cover that got censored because it looked to sexual. lol (Fun Fact: I am reading that issue of Tabula Rasa? right now! It was literally the last comic I touched.)

#32 Posted by stambo42 (142 posts) - 9 months, 25 days ago - Show Bio

Not only is he awful, tacky, and a tracer who seems to have some less than amiable attitudes towards women, but none of those drawings are sexy. Most of them are awkward, either because they feel forced and stiff, or because they fall into an uncanny valley of sorts. Sexy is a state of mind, not a state of mindlessness.

'Dat Big Ole' Symle!' XD

(And you know I am saying it in a silly chicken head voice too.)

I am going to start taking pictures with smiles like this now. =D

@poisonfleur: Yeah, I had actually looked closely at the picture and saw that it was Dazzler, but must have had Magik on my mind when I was typing the final message.

Man I really like Greg Lands art, but didn't believe he was tracing until I saw the graphic showing it.

I feel you on that.

My only real issues with him:

are his blondes (Emma, Dazzler, Magik, etc) look the same to the point where it degrades his work, imo.

Also I don't like the fact that he doesn't make Psylocke look Asian in a lot of his work.
