It's safe to say that people pretty much enjoyed X-Men: First Class. The movie had a reported budget of $160 million and has grossed $353,624,124 worldwide. It's long been reported that a sequel would be made. It's also been reported that Fox and director Matthew Vaughn agreed to begin filming in January 2013 in order to allow Jennifer Lawrence to film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Lawrence will be returning as Mystique along with James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, January Jones, Caleb Landry Jones, Nicholas Hoult and Lucas Till.

Fox has announced that the untitled sequel will be released on July 18, 2014. Looks like they're betting on it being one of their summer tentpole releases. It's an ambitious release date. You have to wonder what else will be released at that time. It's also around San Diego Comic-Con.

As for other comic book movies in 2014, we know Captain America 2 will be released on April 4, 2014 and Marvel will have another untitled/unannounced movie on May 16, 2014. Sony is tentatively planning on releasing a sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man on May 5, 2014. Will Warner Bros/DC Entertainment have anything coming in 2014?

Cain't wait! Any one know if they're going to add any other mutants yet? Would love to see some of the New Mutants in the next one. They often get left out in all the fun.

I hope they don't shake up the cast much by adding mutants just to get their names because that made the previous trilogy suck along with other things but that is another topic entirely.

Only a handful of new mutants like 2 or 3 should be added. I want Jubilee, Warpath, or maybe 1 of the New Mutants or Blink

I just hope they don't overlook James McAvoy on their Fassbender, uh, -bender. Fassbender's Eric is great, but I feel like the gravity with which McAvoy delivers his Xavier - while bringing levity and charm to it - is grossly underrated.

Looking forward to it, I was pleasantly surprised by how awesome the first one was.

I would like to see Sunfire in it as a threat but then as a some what ally. But I would love to see Sauron. First as a life sucking human but I would like to see his pteranodon form. Maybe have him wear a necklace of a pteranodon claw and when he feeds on Havoc it blends DNA just cause I don't think they would add the Savage Land. But I would also like to see Unus duel with Beast and also the Reavers.

One thing I would Love to see as a part of the story would be Banshee getting drafted in Vietnam with another mutant Rusty Collins. There they as one point get kidnapped and sent to an underground blood sport arena run by Mojo Admas. he doesn't know there mutants at first but when he does he wants to kidnap more mutants for the blood sport and make money off it threw his pirate television station. So he forms the Reavers to attack Australia to kill many but to see if any mutants would defend themselves so that the mutants can be spotted. So maybe we can have Lifeguard in there. Also another mutant fighter can be Omega Red before the operation and just with the death spore power. This could spark the rivalry between Omega Red and Banshee.

Now if only they can actually write Emma Frost as a competent character that shares any resemblance to her comic book counterpart, that would be swell.

Great, talk about cashing in. What are they gonna call the sequel? X men Second Class?

@jcbart: Then they would have to recast the role, because January Jones is horrible (even as Betty Draper). That said I am really looking forward to First Class 2 (or whatever they decide to call it), the previous film was a welcomed surprise from the bad taste left in my mouth by X-Men 3, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

She must have finagled a contract requiring the reprisal of the role BEFORE the first film even began production.

Her portrayal of Emma was horrific. No excuse for it - and knowing she will back at it just --- ugh -- I shudder.

Screw the January Jones hate. She's beautiful and you can't expect her to just somehow be Emma Frost when the writing wasn't there. An actor can't suddenly pull out all the wit and charm of a character like that when it's simply not in the script at all.

She's one of a few reasons why I still haven't watched FIRST CLASS and wont see the next one. I don't see the point of giving a character a name and make them nothing like what they are based upon.

I loved First Class and can easily re-watch it and still get a good kick out of it but as many times as have passed I can still only see Betty Draper reading people's minds. Them both being in the sixties doesn't help matters much, lol.

Boo... I was really hoping it would jump a decade and pull a Giant-Sized X-men with an all new team.

Sorry this movie was an abomination for me. Give me a real first class movie with the actual first class, not just random X-Men. Oh and don't put Wolverine in it.

X-Men first class 2? awesome.... i totally forgot how darwin was even around before 2000. or how pixie was called angel, and was apart of the first class and not the new class. OH! and how Havok is older than cyclops, not to mention the lack of Bobby and Jean. McCoy was cool, but the non-existence of Warren bugged me.

Meh. It'll be Interesting to see how much Fox butchers the X-Men franchise this time around.

I think most people were so impressed with Fassbender's portrayal of Magneto that they forgot just how bad the rest of the movie was :)

If anything, the X-Men movies have shown that the writers will completely and utterly change characters when their turn comes to be put in the spotlight. Mystique's transformation from a mute plot device into a relateable, fleshed out character is very telling. They don't even seem to mind much that they're trampling their own continuity with the ferocity of that.. dinosaur chase sequence from Peter Jackson's King Kong. I wholly agree with @X35 's sentiments that unless the writing is there, you really can't judge a character based on the actor portraying them. Look at *the whole* of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Nothing in that movie worked, with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine looking around with pleading eyes, begging for something half compelling to say or do. Based purely on that film, Hugh's Wolvie - while attractive and buff - is terrible.

And like I alluded to, these films are no strangers to screwing characters over. Remember X-Men 1's Sabretooth? Remember.. oooohh.. ALL of their Scott Summers and Ororo Munroe? James Marsden isn't a bad Cyclops, but the SCRIPTS' Cyclops is an unappealing, smirking jerk that never left Marsden a fighting chance.

I feel like this is where Marvel's involvement would've been most beneficial. They're not really into sacrificing a secondary or tertiary character just to play up one that's being pitched as the protagonist. X-Men as a comic is an ensemble thing, but these movies have always had main characters, with throwaway ones backing them up, even with the latter being big names in the comics.

One of the successful choices when structuring First Class was to make it *more* of an ensemble thing than earlier ones, but I still think it has a ways to go before it truly evokes the comics and gives every character their due. In the meantime we'll just have to settle with the fact that unless they're given more importance to the story, they'll be written as part of the scenery.

In terms of matching continuity with the comics, why even bother? If you can't go into these things accepting that they'll make their own concessions to the story and what makes dramaturgical sense in assembling a fitting roster, then you probably shouldn't watch them at all.

Now, the way they dump all over their OWN established continuity, however, is a far more viable complaint. Given the frequency of their character missteps in the past - and mostly present - though, I guess I'd rather see them progressively correct that than stick to their errors.

Huh well it would to early for a Man of Steel sequel, and I doubt they will reboot the Batman series that soon. So maybe Green Lantern 2? or RED 2? A Justice League movie is still years away but a Flash movie could kick start it. I really don't know what DC is going to do after Man of Steel.

Guys... After the very first X-Men movie in 2000, do you honestly think they'll make an X-movie that sticks with the source material? No, so just accept it and move on. Trust me, you'll be much happier after the fact. Would I love an actual First Class movie with the actual First Class? Absolutely, but sine we're not getting it, and we probably will never, I'll settle for this.

That being said, I'm looking forward to this one. The last one was a very good movie, and one of my favorites of the superhero genre (I'd even place it in my top 5).
