With Schism and Regnenesis, the X-Men are facing a new era. With all the dangers the low number of mutants are facing, just about every X-team banded together and found sanctuary on Utopia. A difference in opinions has formed and Cyclops and Wolverine have split up the mutants. Cyclops believes all mutants, children included, need to do whatever it takes, even kill, in order to survive. Wolverine feels mutant children are still kids and need to remain innocent for as long as possible. They should not be trained to be soldiers.
As Wolverine decided to head back to Westchester and re-open the school, the mutants were asked to choose which side they were on. Cyclops and Wolverine have managed to remain civil after almost killing each other and have mentioned that there won't be any hard feelings when they choose. As strongly as both Cyclops and Wolverine felt during their fight, there's bound to be some tension. The X-Men have been asked to take a stand in what they believe in. By staying on Utopia or leaving with Wolverine, they are making it perfectly clear what their position is and what they think of the other side.
With this new era about to be unleashed and looking at the results of the decision (revealed back in early September), there's some big issues that still need to be dealt with. Both sides may say the other side is welcome but by having this schism in the comics, it can't be that easy to simply cross the line and pay the other side a friendly visit. Here are five situations that will have to be dealt with as soon as possible. (There will be some minor spoilers from X-Men: Regenesis #1).== TEASER ==
Psylocke is on Both Sides
Cyclops believes that killing is sometimes necessary when lives are at risk and so does Psylocke. Despite her willingness to follow Wolverine's lead in the secret X-Force team, she chose to stay with Cyclops on Utopia. Her reasoning makes sense. She believes lethal force is sometimes necessary and she wouldn't really fit in a school setting.
At the same time, she will continue to serve in X-Force when Wolverine needs her. Cyclops has needs for some of her abilities and there may come a time when Psylocke is being called upon by Wolverine and Cyclops at the same time. She's going to have to ensure she can properly explain to the other side where she is if they call and she's already in the middle of a mission. There's also the matter that was brought up of her being a spy...
Kitty Pryde and Colossus
Can these two ever catch a break? When they first got together, Colossus cheated on Kitty when the X-Men and other heroes were transported away during Secret Wars. When they got back together, Colossus tried to sacrifice himself in order to cause the cure for the Legacy Virus that was killing mutants. It turned out he was still alive but soon after this discovery, Kitty became trapped in a giant alien missile traveling through space. Magneto managed to bring her back to Earth but she was stuck in her phased/intangible form. About as soon as she was cured, Colossus had to embrace the dark power of the Juggernaut.
Colossus feels he should not be in a school environment with children given all the power residing inside him. Once again, the two lovers find themselves forced to remain apart. Is it time the two gave up on being together or will this separation only make their love stronger?
Beast Running the School With Wolverine
When Beast found out Cyclops and Wolverine were condoning killing with X-Force and had kept the team a secret from everyone, he quit the team. He didn't want anything to do them and turned his attention to S.W.O.R.D. and the Avengers. Being who he is, of course Hank would jump at the chance to be in a school setting once again. It will remain to be seen if he can simply forgive Wolverine for being in X-Force plus the fact that even though they've claimed to disbanded the team, Wolverine went right back and made another X-Force team. A team that hunted down a child that was meant to turn into Apocalypse but hadn't been corrupted just yet.
Wolverine isn't the only one with secrets as Hank has been part of Captain America's Secret Avengers. Will he still take part in missions with them or fully dedicate himself to the new school. Wolverine has the intention of running the school himself but with all his extracurricular activities, we know he won't always be around. Hank is going to have to pick up the slack when Wolverine goes MIA.
As for the secret of X-Force, Cyclops and Storm will also have to deal with this as well. Just like Beast, Storm was appalled at the idea that Scott had a secret kill squad of mutants. If she doesn't agree with his leadership tactics, she might challenge him and take the leadership from him once again.
Rogue and Magneto
Magneto and Rogue have had an on-again-off-again relationship for some time now. After spending time in space and finding Havok, Polaris and Rachel Summers, they now find themselves on opposite sides. Wolverine and Magneto aren't the best of friends. Sure Magneto ripped the Adamantium off his bones that one time and has committed terrorist acts before but is that enough of a reason to keep him away from his school? Probably.
Magneto mentions that he would be allowed to visit Rogue but we're talking the other side of the United States. And it's not like the mutants just sit around doing nothing. There's always some mission or adventure that takes up their time. Rogue is also going to still be appearing in X-Men Legacy which is also the book Gambit will be in. If Rogue and Magneto want to continue their relationship, they're going to have to make some sort of plans.
Why is he at Wolverine's school? Not only did he play a role in jump starting things in Schism, he also made quite a mess at the Xavier Institute when he was a student there. He doesn't believe in Xavier's ideals so the idea of him being back in a school setting is pretty nuts.
Wolverine also isn't too crazy about him either. He may be against kids killing but that doesn't mean he won't kill when he gets ticked off. How old is Quentin now? He looks like he's grown a bit since we last saw him (a growth spurt perhaps?).
Who was it that decided Quentin needed to be taken to the school. In both Schism #5 and Regenesis #1, we see him on his way but not who exactly had a hand in helping him decide to go. Maybe it was Wolverine's idea in order to keep a close eye on him.
There are other issues we need to see resolved. Sam and Dani will be separated. Where is X-23 going to go (Avengers Academy?). Havok and Polaris are going going to be part of X-Factor Investigations. What about Rachel Summers? She's been gone in space for so long, I can't remember if she and Cyclops left off with a good relationship or not. You would think both would want to spend some time together or at least catch up. Hopefully we'll see Rachel and Kitty renew their friendship.
Everything is changing with the X-Men. We're used to seeing many unresolved storylines go on for issues before being mentioned again. Hopefully that won't be the case with these points and we'll see them touched upon while we also see the new plots unfold.
