Do the X-Men each receive a monthly stipend? We see individual members going out for drinks, shopping in stores( Storm and Rogue). As they don't hold down regular jobs,(as they are officially students) who picks up the tab? Is Professor Xavier independently wealthy like Tony Stark or Warren Worthington?

I read somewhere that the Avengers (or at least active duty members) each receive a regular stipend- is there a similar arrangement for the X-Men?

In case this is relevant, in 1981 Avengers received(or were at least offered, as some declined) $1,000 dollars a week. Adjusting for inflation, that's $2,599.48 in todays' money.

In current comics the School is funded by Worthington Industries, so i'd assume the funding also covers staff salaries. Back in the days of Xavier though i think it was implied that they had an expense account, I also vaguely remember someone making a mess of a store and saying "Xavier's not gonna be happy"

Xavier certainly started out being independently wealthy, though there were times he'd occasionally ask Angel for help with financing the school. While he was still in charge of the X-men's finances, they got paid for being X-men the same way Avengers would be paid by Stark or whoever.

But that's just for being an active X-man, so while we can assume that Cyclops and the original class would have gotten paid this way, most students wouldn't unless they were on the main team. So members of The New Mutants, Generation X, and the New X-Men most likely wouldn't have been paid the same way unless and until they graduated to the actual X-men, since they weren't actually supposed to be going on missions.

When the X-men left the school with Storm, I think they mostly lived off the Reavers' treasure (or whatever portion of it they couldn't return for whatever reason), and whatever supplies they found in the abandoned town.

By the time Cyclops took over the school, most of the X-men would have also been part of the teaching staff and may have been paid a salary for that as well, or instead. In SF and Utopia it seemed that Angel and Emma were the primary financiers of the team, but it seems safe to assume that it would have been a similar situation, where at least active X-men would have been paid.

The way things are now, it seems like the X-men who live at the school would be paid for being either active X-men (as in, assigned missions), or active faculty, or both. So probably all of the senior X-men would, as well as Doop, Quire, and Armor, who all have jobs at the school. I would assume that the New X-men who are enlisted for missions would get paid for being X-men, while the students who aren't would not. We know that Wolverine's pretty rich, but also that he spent most of his fortune establishing the school. Xavier also claimed to be broke around that time, which is why the school is now primarily financed by Angel again. And by Krakoa's ability to create trees that grow diamonds.

I get the feeling that none of Cyclops' outlaw team actually get paid so much as they'd just be given money when they needed it, since the whole operation is probably being funded through whatever assets Cyclops and Emma could hide well enough to keep from being frozen while they were in jail. They're supposed to be crafty like that, right?

As said above, Wolverine financed the the school itself with the fortune he's made over the centuries. As for continued operation, he recouped and surpassed his losses by taking Quire out to cheat at gambling in a space casino.

I think Emma's supposed to be more wealthy than Cyclops, but he's still totally a trust-fund superhero; I mean, he was adopted by Xavier after all. And both of them are supposed to extra crafty; with the way Emma's good with money and Cyclops is good with planning, surely they'd have some contingency plan for if they were ever fugitives.

I remember reading that Bobby Drake (Iceman) worked as an accountant for a while.

Did any others have real jobs outside of super-heroing and adventuring?

Well, Beast is a scientist, Angel was an industrialist, and Xavier was a professor.

Havok and Polaris were archaeologists? oh, and research assistants with Madrox. Actually, Madrox has probably had the most day jobs.. Nightcrawler was a priest. Rogue was a mechanic..

Karma was/is a librarian. mm.. most of the active X-men are teachers..

I think other than that, most of them have only had jobs that would fit under the umbrella of "adventurer": secret agent, assassin, thief, private investigator, etc..

Cyclops can probably get money from any of his old accounts even if he's wanted, I guess, since he could just get Magik to teleport him into his bank's vault. But I'd be willing to bet he has some secret accounts that can't be traced to him anyway; he just seems like that kind of guy.

Well, Armor's technically been an X-man since Unstoppable (2007), but in the latest volume of Wolverine & the X-Men (vol.2, 2014), both her and Quire are shown to be teaching assistants.

So many are rich on their own. I know Rogue has cash due to being Destiny's heir and Emma spent all her money on Utopia (based on what she claimed during Schism) but that's obviously been fixed now. Monet is rich, Sunspot too.

He is. Latour explained that he graduated and is a probationary TA for his run. Here is the interview snippet:

    http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=49601

I understand that one student will have a graduation of sorts and actually become a teacher, and that's Quentin Quire. So let's talk a little bit about him. What's your sense of the character and why did you want to make him a teacher? How does that change his role in the series and his dynamic with Wolverine?

Latour and Asrar will hone in on a smaller case while giving an increased role to Quentin Quire and adding Fantomex to the faculty

Latour: Well, in Jason Aaron's hands we've seen Quentin slowly mature. All he ever wanted was to be important, to feel like his life mattered, to be loved, because deep down he's afraid that none of that is true. As he's grown closer to his classmates he's starting to realize he can't always force the world into a shape that suits him; that what he wants is impossible without other people.

So as we begin this series he's reluctantly gone along with a probationary promotion to the position of graduate teaching assistant. He's still very torn about his place in the world and learning that he one day becomes The Phoenix and a full fledged member of the future X-Men as a result of "Battle of the Atom" has done nothing to squelch those feelings. It's increasingly difficult for him to wrap his head around the idea that some day he gets all the power and status he's always wanted, and yet he still seems to follow the flock. You couple his struggle to live up to these new expectations with a very dark and important secret about the Phoenix and the future that he's keeping from everyone and slowly but surely some potentially dangerous cracks are forming in Quentin's self image.
