Review: X-Men #1

Posted by G-Man (29390 posts) - - Show Bio
It's been a while since we've had an official "new" X-Men #1. Is the battle against Vampires enough to warrant a new title?

The Good

If you were afraid that after Second Coming (which hasn't officially ended yet) the X-Men would just sit around and do nothing, you don't have to worry. Things start out with a bang as a suicide vampire bomber explodes. If you've seen the preview, you know Jubilee was nearby and could possibly become infected. The question is, was she just an innocent bystander or was she actually a target?

When we see Cyclops and Wolverine actually sitting around (watching TV), it's nice that he lets Wolverine assemble his own team. With so many mutants/X-Men on Utopia, it makes more sense to assemble a team depending on the situation.

Vampires may be the flavor of the month and people may be getting tired of seeing them everywhere but the nice thing about them is you can have battles where Wolverine can simply cut loose on them. For some reason it's okay for him to slice apart a vampire while I don't think it'd be quite okay if it was another mutant or human.

The Bad

Vampires. But it wasn't as horrible as I feared. Some of the vampires look bad. There was a couple moments the dialogue felt too forced. When the suicide bomber vampire bumps into a "civilian" and he gets ready to say something, his buddy says to him, "Dude, don't. Better let that one go." Sure people talk like that but it didn't seem to flow right. Another moment was when a police officer encounters a big ugly vampire carrying a huge sword, he's completely calm about it. You can guess how that goes.

I did enjoy Paco Medina's art for the most part. When it comes to the X-titles, there's some variations on the art. My one complaint and I hate to bring it up, but the way Pixie was drawn didn't look right. Maybe she's been taking her vitamins or something.

The Verdict - 4/5

The X-Men have a big battle coming their way. I'm not crazy about vampires but I do think this could be a welcome change from fighting mutants or other mutant hating humans. There is an acknowledgment to Storm's past encounter with Dracula that was nice. Since this is the first issue, the battle hasn't fully started yet. The pieces are being put in place. There is action. There are some potential implications occurring already (like the fate of Jubilee). It just didn't blow me completely away. I'm curious to see how the events in this title will correspond to the other X-books like Uncanny X-Men. If we're going to see a huge battle between the X-Men and vampires, you would expect to see mention in the other books as well. Hopefully we'll have a good amount of continuity between the titles to avoid any future nitpickings from people like me.

It's a good start. I feel I should be more excited about the X-Men fighting the "Lord of Vampires" but I'm not...yet.

I liked this issue, not typical vampires which is good, and the more Jubilee the better!!

So does this replace X-Men legacy or Uncanny? Or is it now a third ongoing (main/classic) X-title

#4 Posted by tonis (6202 posts) - - Show Bio

too much vampires and no beer make Homer something something...

Dracula was much cooler when he wasn't being sucked dry by the industry. One question, how do you convince the undead to be a suicide bomber?

@CombatCraigFM: It's a new adjective-less.
#6 Posted by SupremoMaximo (209 posts) - - Show Bio

So you're saying that there should be a Wolverine vs Twilight Movie??

TO QUOTE kerukun878:

Korg WILL SAY:

@spider-pig23:  So why ask me if I even read it? Just to be unnecessarily rude?
#15 Posted by spider-pig23 (1117 posts) - - Show Bio
@Korg:
No.
I asked you because you might have said that without actually reading the comic.
I was simply confirming that you have acquired the information necessary to conclude that the issue is "lame"-in your opinion.

I'm sooo glad I passed your exam for having an opinion on something. Next time, just post your own opinion instead of trying to attack mine for no reason whatsoever.

Ooooohhhh....
I'm sorry.......
Is your opinion hurt?
Hmmm.......I'll see what I can do to mend it.......
But......a word of advice: Try not to be so sensitive.....otherwise, your opinion - or as you treat it, your ego - might, might, be destroyed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe this means that Jubilee will die.  How I hate that character, ever since she was introduced in the 90s cartoon.  I forgot but is Blade going to be involved in this arc?

#19 Posted by Mutant X (1543 posts) - - Show Bio

So could I just pick this up and start reading or should I go back and read Second Coming?

#20 Posted by G-Man (29390 posts) - - Show Bio
@HT101: Blade (versus Wolverine?) is on the cover preview for issue #2.

I was not happy with this idea when I first heard about it, but then I read the issue, I eneded up really liking it.

YOu have to wonder with a third x main title which one is going to be the  mediocre one, as i doubt all three will be consistently as good as they've been for second coming and on that note, i wonder how  much long astonishing will continue along. then there's x-force which they're ending for no good reason, right when it was getting to be the best x title along with new mutants. i take dracula with a grain of salt even though yeah its tacky, but Blade? really? i could do without ever seeing that again.

You changed the topic by saying,"So why ask me if I even read it? Just to be unnecessarily rude?"
So, In response to you changing the topic:

Anyone?

@Mutant X: I would almost start with Messiah Complex since that is where all of the things that are culminating in the X-Verse right now start there.

I just thought it was a complete waste of money, and I'll never get back the time it took to read.  Then, at the end of it, they advertise more vampire related spin-offs that I'm meant to waste more money on.

@Nitrologly: Oh, really? That's good news. I didn't really want to spend $40-$50 on it anyways :P. Thanks for the help!

@HT101: im looking out for blade too - of all the ways for the X-Men to (heroically) interact with the MU at large, Blade isnt a bad character to start with. did you catch his appearances in the short run of Marvel Comics Presents..took some shuffling to find him in the 8 page installments, if he was featured in that issue at all. but those appearances were pretty great.

also - Jubilee was introduced before the cartoon. she was just really inanely represented on tv. debuted in the outback if im remembering correctly.
#36 Posted by HT101 (135 posts) - - Show Bio
@M0N5T3R: That was the first time I saw Jubilee and I hated her from that point on.  I am glad to see Blade is back in the Marvel Universe after being somewhat quiet for a while.  Hope he stays around for a while this time.

As a new reader I am so lost on X-men I am happy to grab a # 1.  It will be my first X-men series to follow. I hope they explain where vampires came from as Dr. Strange got rid of them all but Blade (whose not a full vampire) and Morbius who was made buy a neogentics accident.

(the reaosn for the dr strange thing was because a new law that banned the blood suckers from the books)

This might be one I wait and pick up in trade paper backs. I'll see just how it plays out for a few issues.

I was worried because I thought this was going to be a real play on Twilight, and Or True Blood. But, the vampires were much more Buffy style than anything else, which is a great thing. Also, this seems to be Jubilee heavy, so that's a good reason I'm following this. Also, I loved how they acknowledged Storm's past as Bloodstorm and stuff like that...

Who is the big vampire with the sword. Is he in the atlantean sect?
