X-Men Unlimited # 37
"Sacrificial Worlds" is one of those stand-alone issues that successfully manages to tell a most profound tale within a limited amount of space. Kaare Andrews writing is both sharp and emotional, and infuses the appropriate amount of action with the restrictions imposed on it. Worlds tells the tale of Hutch, Illyana Rasputin's son from an alternate reality, who is cursed to live between realities, or risk destroying all creation. There are a number of different artists at work here, and it works well. A lot of the time, multiple artists can be distracting, but for a tale this epic, it enhances it. Andrews, Dave McCaig, Joshua Middleton, Troy Nixey, Dave Stewart, Skottie Young, and Pat Duke all share artistic duties on this story, but it is Andrews epic battle scenes that really drive it.
Granted, Sacrificial Worlds becomes a bit convoluted with the introduction of Satchel, Mephisto, and the alternate reality Illyana Rasputin, but it is tied up well, leaving room for a possible follow-up. However, this is not truly necessary, because the entire creative team managed to weave a poignant and action-packed fairy tale that stands on its own merits. I give Sacrificial Worlds three out of five stars. It was a good story, delivering surprise revelations, humor, sufficient character development, and beautiful artwork. As an Illyana Rasputin fan, it definitely delivered readers a good dose of Magik following her demise of the Legacy Virus on Earth--616.
