X-Men: The 198 follows several mutants after the events of M-Day. And this story takes place after Decimation: House of M - The Day After.
To me the great thing about this issue (as well as the rest of the series) is that it focuses on lesser known characters.
Magma. Erg. Toad. Lorelei Travis. Mr. M not what you'd expect, but an interesting story.

I enjoyed the first issue of The 198 as it gave you a look into the mutant world and its recovery after the Decimation. However, you are not looking into the world of renown mutants such as the X-Men. No, we are seeing things through the eyes of individuals like Magma, Mister M, Lorelei Travis and Toad.
All their stories can be thought of as what truly defines them in this changing world as they may have to change who they are or what they believe to survive.
Magma's heartbreak was really saddening, and tries to say that the Decimation was a bad thing, taking the life of an innocent lover and leaving behind the next Scarlet Witch, an insane woman who has lost her love.
I enjoyed Toad's story of heroism and how he saved Lorelei was amusing, though unfortunately it took him too long and she had already been brutalized by the prejudice cowards of Mutant Town.
Yet my favorite story was the short and slightly humorous tale of the mysterious Mr. M. I LOVED when he toppled a Sentinel, saying that it had almost stepped upon a rare caterpillar...I thought it was amusing that a mutant could wield that much power and yet use it so nonchalantly.
