Not in Westchester Anymore
I picked this and the rest of this mini-series up so that I could get caught up with the current state of affairs for the X-Men. I know the results of Schism, so I was going into this with more information than most. The good news is, I do not know what happened during the event, so I will have fresh eyes when I get to that part of the series.
The only other X-Titles I have read so far are Magneto: Not A Hero and Uncanny X-Force, so a lot of this issue was new to me. I have heard plenty of complaints about these "Prelude" books - mostly that they are filled with a lot of back-story. I am actually banking on the back-story, as I have A LOT of catching up to do.
I am stating all this because if you are new to X-Men, I believe this may be a good jumping on point. This book alone offers a lot of back-story on the relationship between Professor X, Cyclops and the current "mood" of the X-Men. I feel that after reading this book (and hopefully the rest of the mini-series, I will be prepared to move on to Schism, X-Men, Wolverine and the X-Men, etc.
So, it is obvious, I liked the back story; I liked the mood (very ominous); and for the most part, I liked the art. It looked a little strange at times, but the dark brushstrokes really helped set the mood of the book. My favorite part of the book was learning more about Cyclops. Sadly, I have always thought of him as a joke (especially compared to Wolverine, Magneto or Professor X. In this one issue, I was able to gain a good majority of respect for the character, and his ability to lead the X-Men.
I move to the next issue excited to see what it and the rest of the mini have in store for me. At the very least, I will get a much needed history lesson!
