Plot Summary
The harrowing saga of young Magneto's struggle to save his family from the Nazi onslaught continues as the German army invades Poland--and our hero learns brutal new lessons and discovers new strength within himself. But even with all of his hard-won smarts and developing skills, how can one boy fight against the horrors of the Warsaw ghetto and the killing winter of 1941? It's a poignant Marvel Knights take on the life of a young Magneto, by Greg Pak (WORLD WAR HULK) and Carmine Di Giandomenico (DAREDEVIL: BATTLIN' JACK MURDOCK).
Spoilers:
The Eisenhardt's struggle to survive in a world quickly being dominated by the nazi regime. The Jewish people are being hunted down and forced to live off of 184 calories a day. (At this point, nazis are the ones rationing food to the Polish and Jewish people) Max sees a boy running with extra bread, people are chasing him for the food, and they knock him down. Max finds some extra bread and hands it back to the boy. Moments later, Max witnesses the boys murder at the hand of a Nazi soldier. Max grabs his penknife and attempts to kill the man, but his Uncle Eich stops him. The family continues to survive as Max smuggles food to his family. Ruth becomes ill. The family tried to escape Poland, but gets captured by the Nazis. A firing squad lines the family up and shoots. The bullets fly at Max's head, and he falls into the pit with his family. To his surprise he survives, and is put on a train to Auschwtiz.

The Best Comic Marvel is Putting Out This year

Even though I knew this moment was coming (it was originally told in New Mutants Vol. 1 #49), I was still so floored afterward it took me hours before I could even begin to look at this issue rationally. The storytelling is crafted *that* well.
Now that I can step back to appraise it, it is still a remarkable issue. Once again Greg Pak tells Magneto's story by artfully weaving it around real events. One of the many remarkable things about this series is how subtly Pak is molding Max into the man who would become Magneto. We can see by the choices he faces and consequences he endures how this essentially good boy became the complex and ambiguous character we know today.
This miniseries is essential reading not only for Magneto fans and those interested in history, but for anyone. Even if they don't normally read comics.
