X-Men: Legacy #8 Review

Overview:

Legion and Blindfold go on a date as he decides whether or not to change the future.

The Good:

The story is really good. It shows several sides of Legion and Blindfold both and it works out. Legion is shown as confident, weak, powerful, and, as always, crazy. It sounds like too much but it all works out here because Legion is all of those things and makes it work out. One thing that really is interesting the Professor Xavier persona in his head, while mysterious, it sure can kick ass when necessary. The date between Blindfold and Legion is interesting as well.

Legion shows some real maturity and growth as he deals with a mutant who has one of the strangest powers around and makes a less than surprising but still important decision. As much as Spurrier tries, there is never any real doubt over his decision because of the nature of superhero comics. It is, however, a good thing to see him come the decision because it demonstrates some character growth for him.

Simon Spurrier does a great job with the writing. He has a great grasp on Legion and can really make some weird sci-fi/fantasy concepts accessible and enjoyable. His dialogue is really good as well.

Tan Eng Huat’s art is hit and miss, some scenes are really good but some are just odd looking.

The Bad:

Nothing major, the biggest hurdle is the art. If you can get past some odd panels, including one where Legion looks a bit like an elf, there is nothing that is glaringly wrong.

Verdict:

Legion shows some maturity when dealing with his new “pro-active” philosophy. Solid writing by Spurrier really keeps the book going through some rough art in places and is complimented by it in others. Overall, if you have been enjoying the series so far, you will like this issue as well.
