X-Men: Legacy #5 Review
Overview:
Things get real when Legion dives into Blindfolds past.
The Good:
Blindfold’s past is a bit depressing to say the least. As far as I know, no one has ever gotten too far into it and now Simon Spurrier has pulled out all of the stops to give her a less than pleasant one. The issue spends most of its time looking in on her past from Legion’s view and seeing his commentary adds a nice dimension to the standard flashback issue. Another huge plus it that Legion is getting a good handle on his powers on his own in a quick, but believable, way; Legion has always come across as either a whiner or as a psychopath and seeing him in control (relatively) is a nice change of pace; demonstrating his intelligence works to the issue’s advantage too.
Simon Spurrier does a great job writing this one. He crams a lot of information into a small space but keeps it straightforward; some might look down on this but it is definitely the right course of action here and he does it well. There is not a tone of dialogue as much as it is Legion narrating Blindfold’s memories and Spurrier keeps it flowing without losing focus.
The art by Jorge Molina could almost tell the story alone. The art is a perfect fit for the issue, able to convey the emotion of the flashbacks and the action of the present. It is great.
The Bad:
Nothing major that I saw.
Verdict:
The reveal of the villain is a little abrupt but looking back on the rest of the series so far, makes total sense. Simon Spurrier and Jorge Molina deliver a fantastic issue that has emotion and action and fires on all cylinders. Any fan of the series, or just the X-Men, will like this issue as it is serious and fun at the same time and is really good.
