X-Men: Legacy #1 Review
X-Men: Legacy #1 Review
Overview:
Legion is the subject of this adventure.
The Good:
The story has the potential to be an interesting one. As always, Legion struggles to keep his multiple personas in check and he has traveled to the Indian Himalayans to study under a guru for old telepaths. One of the better parts of this story is that it doesn’t talk about AvX at all, which sounds like a bad thing but it is because it is happening during the event and they are so isolated, they don’t know about it. This leads to a troubling development for Legion that causes problems.
Simon Spurrier takes over the writing here and does a good job for a first issue. I am not familiar with any other work he has done but it is clear that he is taking his time to set up the story. This could be bad or good but after one issue it is too soon to tell. Even though the issue is a little sow, it still has some humor and a decent pace. Legion actually referencing his hair was pretty funny.
Tan Eng Huat is the artist here and he has a very unique style to say the least. The scenes in the Qortex Complex were very well done and the abstract characters are captured very well.
The Bad:
The art is very unique and some of the panels in the real world look kind of funny.
Legion has a very Scottish accent here. I am not very familiar with the character but he did grow up in Scotland but spent a lot of time in a coma and in his last appearance, during Mike Carey’s recent run, he didn’t have as strong of an accent if any. This is a little jarring if you were not expecting it and takes some seriousness out of the situation with the phrases he uses.
Verdict:
Simon Spurrier and Tan Eng Huat deliver a nice first issue that takes its time without getting boring. The story has some nice potential and looks to be good. While the art it not the best, it seems to give a love it or hate it vibe, the story moves along well enough that it doesn’t matter. The series is in good hands and looks promising.
