Wolverine (Logan), Shadowcat (Kitty), Nightcrawler (Kurt), Rogue, Iceman (Bobby), and Cannonball (Sam) go out motorbiking through a canyon which will soon be turned into a reservoir. Logan and Sam develop a friendly rivalry, and the groups get divided into pairs. When Kitty gets separated from her partner, Rogue, she ends up crashing, and is rescued by a stranger named Danielle Moonstar. Dani is excited to meet a fellow mutant, and Kitty quickly befriends her before bringing her back to the Xavier Institute. At the Institute, Professor Xavier interviews Dani for a long period of time before convening the rest of the X-Men. On the way to the meeting, Logan and Sam agree to a race, though Logan is suspicious. At the meeting, Xavier announces that Dani will join the school. Kitty, excited, invites Dani to be her roommate. When they leave, Xavier confides in Logan that Danielle has telepathy, but she has troubling emotional problems, which disturbs both of them.
The X-Men conduct a training session with the New Mutant students, which now includes Dani, wherein the X-Men act as “obstacles” for the students to overcome. When Dani is left is churning water, caused by Storm, she mentally assails the X-Men with illusions of their greatest fears: losing control of their powers. The attack ends when Xavier intervenes, and ends the mental illusions brought on by Dani. After the incident, Dani storms out of Xavier’s office with Kitty, fearing that she will be expelled by Xavier; when Kitty assures Dani that he won’t, she ominously warns “He better not.” That night, Dani experiences nightmares, which causes her telepathy to give the rest of the X-Men vivid nightmares: Wolverine sees himself back at Weapon X, Storm experiences the walls of her room enclose on her, and Xavier awakens to find Sentinels attacking the Institute. Xavier discusses the issue with Logan and Storm, and says that they must deal with Dani, which Kitty overhears. In the morning, Kitty awakens to find all traces of Dani gone. Xavier and the rest of the X-Men say that they have never heard of her.
Xavier explains that Kitty had been sleeping since the crash in the canyon the previous day, and insists that Dani wasn’t real. When Kitty tries to rest, she experiences a dream involving Dani again. Confident that Dani indeed exists, she enlists Nightcrawler’s help. Meanwhile, Logan and Sam have their race, with other New Mutants acting as “obstacles” to help Sam, though Logan ends up winning due to Sam’s overconfidence. Kitty and Kurt go to the near-Ghost Town near the canyon, where Kitty answers a call from Dani on a broken payphone, which causes both Kitty and Kurt to doubt Kitty’s sanity. The two find Dani’s grandfather, who tells them that Dani disappeared two years ago in the canyons. Kitty takes a gamble and phases through the ground where she crashed to find an underground and flooding cavern, which holds the real Danielle Moonstar in a telepathic trance to keep herself sustained. The two are rescued by the New Mutants, and Dani recuperates at the Institute, where she thanks Kitty for believing in her.
