'Mournful' covers could be a subgenre all of their own. Sometimes we have the shot of a character raging against God/nature, fists flying at the heavens, rain pelting down in sympathy at their distress. Alternatively we have an expression of understated hopelessness. Both can make good covers but clearly it's the latter that's on display here. The fantastic Leinil Yu helps make this cover stand out from the moribund crowd with some nice flourishes. Firstly the white celtic cross in the foreground really stands out, secondly, Professor X's facial expression seems so desperate and thirdly, the bunch of roses, bowing to the ground in respect or despair. Finally, I like the addition of the statue, especially with his cross (x?) pointing in the good Professor's direction. There's a lot going on and it all works.
I have ranked this cover no 203 as part of a long term project I am producing on my own blog 'marvel-ous' on blogspot.com re: my favourite marvel comic book covers. Please visit http://dmstarz.blogspot.com and check out the other covers that have made my top 250.
