dmstarz's favourite marvel comic cover no230
This review relates to Leinil Yu's variant cover.
Good group shots are few and far between. They end up either resorting to cliched layouts or become too busy to be compelling. For issue 100 of X-Men, Marvel produced an astonishing eight covers, mostly groupshots. Art Adams produced a very fine cover with plenty of character, but a little too unfocused to make the top 250. However, the amazing Francis Leinil Yu, who was fairly new to Marvel at this point, pulls off here a very distinctive, atypical image. Interestingly, his recent Avengers covers have also contained some unusual variations on the group shot (particularly the issue where they're turned upside down by a plane crash). What I like here is not only the peculiar composition of the cover but also his stunning take on Rogue, my favourite Marvel character bar none. She's wearing my favourite Rogue costume and Leinil Yu makes her look fabulous. His Nightcrawler's pretty good too, very threatening.
I have ranked this cover no 230 as part of a long term project I am producing on my own blog 'marvel-ous' on blogspot.com re: my favourite marvel comic book covers. Please visit http://dmstarz.blogspot.com and check out the other covers that have made my top 250.
