Okay. Not Great Though.
Okay, maybe I'm the only one who didn't think this issue was that great. Don't get me wrong, it was enjoyable: most of the characters are well-written, their interactions here are great, there some good action which shows just how badass Rogue is. However, I noticed some serious flaws that kind of dragged down the issue for me. First off. what is with Kitty's dialogue? Like, how old is she supposed to be? She talks like she's thirteen. I was a little thrown when she said OMG the first time, but to then say it again? Her characterization here is a little out of line with her current role in the X-Men line: headmistress of the school, drill sergeant to the younger versions of the original X-Men in Bendis' All New X-Men. It just threw me that Kitty was now being written as if she had been pulled out of the old X-Men Evolution cartoon.
Another bone I have to pick with this book isn't really a flaw necessarily, its just that its following a very overused trope. This trope is none other than the baby. When I was reading, I literally said to myself "Really? We're going with the whole infant harbinger of destruction thing...again?" I mean, when you think about it, that whole plot device is so overused. As a matter of fact, Wonder Woman is currently doing a story with the exact same thing. To be fair, we don't really know what's happening with the baby here yet, but so far, it sure seems similar.
Furthermore, how in the hell did Jubilee just...come back from the dead? Last I heard, she was a vampire. Now she's taking care of this baby she just...found somewhere? What?
Also, the end scene with the villain was a bit cliché.
HOWEVER, I will pick up the next issue just to see where things are going. The issue was enjoyable, but it just wasn't "oh my god", great like everyone's trying to make it out to be.
