The X-Gene is a genetic abnormality in the Marvel Universe that many consider the next step in human evolution. The presence of the X-Gene is what makes a mutant different from a normal human Edit
History
The X-Gene was created by the Celestials when they came to Earth and experimented on the first humans almost at the beginning.
Mutation
The X-Gene is a gene held by mutants. The X-Gene is what makes the mutants display these amazing abilitis, ranging from flight to telekinesis.
The X-Gene/mutation normally becomes active during puberty, usually when the person with the gene is under incredible stress etc. Jean Grey's powers manifested when her friend was hit by a car.
But, on some occasions, some mutants have had certain powers since they were born e.e. [[Nightcrawler:char: and his blue skin and [[Madrox:char: and his duplication, although the latter's mutation was caused by radiation, so technically never had the X-Gene.
The proper term for the species of people with the X-Gene is Homo Superior as has been stated many a times in the comics.
Family
It is not thought that the X-Gene always runs through the family.
A perfect example of both of these is the Guthries Family. Many of Lucinda Guthrie and her husband's children have had displayed mutations e.e.:
But, then again some haven't e.e.:
Lucinda herself has never displayed any abilities and it is unknown if the children's father had these powers.
Power Grading
A grading system had been created to put mutants into to catagories fitting they're powers. Here is the grading scale:
Epsilon-Delta-Level-Mutant: Small mutation, most probably physical. Mutants at this level tend not to have a lot of power.
Beta-Level-Mutant: Mutation of a higher level, although still not that strong. Most people who can only fly are put into this catagory.
Alpha-Level-Mutant: People who are pretty powerful are put in this catagory, but have some sort of restriction on their power.
Omega-Level-Mutant: A mutant with unlimited potential to have unlimited power. For more information, Omega-level mutant
Immunity
All mutantsare immune to normal diseases such as AIDS. The only virus that has been showed to effect mutants is the Legacy Virus.
Rise & Fall
For a while, mutants were on the rise, and there were millions all over the planet. But these numbers were ultimatly decimated by the Scarlet Witch when she caused M-Day.
