"...before we pass out the Kool-Aid."
Second Coming returns to X-Force for chapter 9 of 14. The X-Men are literally stuck in a situation where sacrifices aren't feared, they're more than likely a reality. With Bastion's forces coming through a portal, someone is bound to get hurt. Scott has a plan that involves X-Force, but this plan will likely end them.
What You Need To Know.
Mutant Utopia is enclosed in a giant red sphere thing. Nightcrawler is dead, but not the only casualty. Hope is determined to see the end of this, even if she wasn't prepared to be here. Henry McCoy is back, only because he feels it is part of his oath, he still isn't a fan of Scott's decisions. Bastion is poised to kill every mutant in the world. The Good.
The first 10 pages, almost literally half of the book contains no dialogue. Instead the writers let Mike Choi draw some incredibly phenominal pages depicting the battle on the bridge, in my opinion. Whether you liked or disliked the art, you have to admit that giving an artist half of a major chapter in an event is risky but also a vote of confidence in his ability to portray the story. With that being said, when the writing does pick up and the end of page 10 it's exactly what you'd expect out of Craig Kyle and Chris Yost, a strong chapter that is some of their best work that I've read.
There's a scene involving some key players of the X-Men and their interactions with each other are hard to see, but in a good way. There are so many varieties of emotions going on with each character, I don't think I would have trusted this with any other creative team than the one in this issue.
Cable and Hope.
The last few pages show that Scott's decision making process isn't easy on him, but also that he knows what he has to do in order to keep this race alive.
